Mortal Spirits Kombat Quarterfinal #2: Lepanto Solera Reserva (Spain) vs Remy Martin Coeur (France)

Yo Berserkz,

Back to my spirits faceoff as we have a Brandy de Jerez from Lepanto representing the country of Spain facing off against Remy Martin’s Coueur du Cognac. Ready? FIGHT!

  • Lepanto Solera Reserva Brandy vs Remy Martin Coueur do Cognac

COLOR and BODY: Both are equal in appearance, dark golden brown in color and neither one having a distinct advantage in appearance over the other. The bodies are almost equal but the Remy Martin has longer tears in the glass and a bit fuller body in the mouth.

NOSE: The Lepanto has a very pleasant sweet nut and caramel nose and more than a whiff of heat on it. The Remy Martin’s, on the other hand, is all stone fruit – way more peach aromas than you would normally get in a Cognac, but remember that this one has been slower distilled to get more of that fruit flavor deliberately by Remy Martin.

The Lepanto is rich and buttery and warming on the palate, tasting more akin to a Scotch whisky now that I think about it than it does a brandy. No doubt this is the influence of the sherry casks. It’s a touch sweet with vanilla flavor and some creaminess to the texture before the heat kicks in.

The Remy Martin is soft as silk and the heat is much better integrated. It’s sweet and fruity and extremely smooth for a Cognac. This is both its strength and its weakness as it is much more pleasant but definitely not as complex as other spirits.

So it really comes down to the complexity of the Lepanto vs. the smoothness of the Remy Martin Coueur du Cognac. Both are tremendous spirits but I gotta give the edge to the complexity here. The Lepanto takes it.

Winner and moving on to the semi-finals: Lepanto Solera Reserva Brandy de Jerez. [cheers.gif]
