Apples, Lime, Saline with a strong acid profile. Getting some flint and chalk but fruit comes across stronger. This is very good .
Big fan of ML wines and Koosah–a variety of producers consistently make outstanding chard and pinot from that site.
Wine aside, how long before someone mentions the elephant in the room?! I suppose this counts? Lol
I’m still trying to wrap my head around Koosah. I’ve had Walter Scott’s and Mogen Long’s a few times now, and sometimes I love them, sometimes the fruit profile can be a little lean compared to other cuvees which can make the acid seem out of balance. I think this site may just require more bottle age. It sort of reminds me of Dauvissat Sechet - just super salty, mineral, and acid driven and needs time to come together.
I love that Seth posts the stats on his wines, and based on the TA that he regularly achieves, I think his wines should probably deserve 15 years in a cold dark cellar…
It is definitely the most austere in the Morgen Long stable, and in that direction in the Walter Scott lineup, though e.g. Martin Woods’ bottling isn’t quite so lean. Not sure what lesson to draw from that other than “it’s a little producer dependent”?
I’ve only had the 22 and 23 from Walter Scott. The 22, had gobs of fruit and I thought it was the best one to drink young in the range of single vineyards. The 23 is polar opposite, super austere and mineral.
Nailed it. Walter Scott and Morgen Long are intentionally reductive. I was told at Martin Woods they don’t force reduction but if some happens during winemaking so be it.
Ha. I picked up a '23 Koosah from SommCellars for a refresher on ML and whether to take advantage of his 24 offering. They described it as his “fullest,” hence me thinking I’d avoid a super acid-driven wine that is tough to peek at early.
Sounds like I’ll be using the decanter for a bit this weekend.
Well based on Will’s comment about the 22, which admittedly I have not tried, maybe they copied their pitch from last year’s offer!
I know the 21 and 23 are pretty lean (still very nice wines though).
Still trying to decide how i feel about this vineyard. I might prefer freedom hill. Fortunately i have several more days with this bottle to decide
I think Freedom Hill is a clear step up from Koosah for Walter Scott. Generally pretty close to and sometimes exceeds X Novo from my experience.
For Seth X Omni and Temperance obviously, but Witness Tree and the Eola Amity Hills always seem to drink well young.
Drank mine over the past 24 hours. Decanted initially for two hours, corked half a bottle for today. It was pretty lean as others have said, even after the modest weight it put on with air. Not-quite-ripe green orchard fruit and lime bordering on tart. Acidity super high.
I guess I’ll chalk this up to the vineyard and youth. Need to track down an X Omni.
I found the 22 kosah from Walter Scott one of the best oregon chards ive ever had.
My experience as well with the ML 21 vintage (100% Kosah labeled as E-AH). Maybe I’d give the X Omni a photo finish edge. I was too cheap to buy the 2022 vintage as it had a hefty price increase.
