2003 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (10/13/2013)
flawed. The cork was soaked through and the wine tasted cooked
2005 Robert Foley Claret - USA, California, Napa Valley (10/13/2013)
All blacks cab nose with loads of cassis and cranberries. The palate is sleek and crisp with everything in place, nothing over the top. Surprisingly old school tasting. Clean and controlled. I liked this a lot.
2009 Donum Pinot Noir East Slope Carneros - USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros (10/13/2013)
Big, plush nose of blackberries and some vanilla. The palate is big, very big, mouthcoating and all about fruit. It did have clean edges, meaning it was not cloying at all but it is right on the edge. I like wines like these so buyer beware. Probably too big for most.
2007 Domaine de la Mordorée Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de la Reine des Bois - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (10/1/2013)
Wow overripe. And I like my purple drank but damn! The nose is like a licorice shop that exploded. The palate has red fruits black fruits sweet tarts you name it. I hope time mellows this out. Geez.
1995 Château d’Yquem - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes (9/29/2013)
The nose is full of honey and peaches. The palate hits every crevice in the mouth and throat with caramel, coconut, candied peach, fresh orange. Unctuous but never heavy. Great acid. Very good if not great yquem.
2004 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut - France, Champagne (9/29/2013)
Man I love this champagne. From the nose of yeast that yields to apricot pit to the palate full of citrus and very bright wild raspberries. Fine beaded and a mouth filling mousse. A finish that lasts longer than most champagnes I’ve had. To me, absolutely worth the money. Amazing.
2009 Fairchild Estate Cabernet Sauvignon G III - USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena (9/29/2013)
I’ve been drinking a lot of Fairchild lately and last night I had dinner with someone whose love for these wines started at the same time as mine so Fairchild it was again. This bottle had the most stunning nose not only of any Fairchild I’ve ever had but of any wine this year. Hands down. A mix of potpourri, vanilla, purple flowers and a hint of smoke. The nose did not change for an hour and a half after an hour decant. The palate was bright, fresh and medium in weight with fresh plums and hints of baking spices. Velvet in feel. If the palate had held up to the nose this wine would’ve cracked my top ten ever. Sadly it did not. A great wine none the less.
1998 Weinhofgut Anton Zimmermann Bernkastel-Kueser Weisenstein Riesling Auslese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (9/27/2013)
A bit of petrol on the nose hints of nutmeg and sage. The palate is oh so good with passion fruit honey and apricot. Delicious long finish. Great place.
2008 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Estate - USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena (9/27/2013)
Big chocolate nose with raspberries, cassis and a little beef. The palate has lots of dark fruit, cranberries, beef and drying tannins. Great wine. Needs time.
NV Moutard Pere et Fils Champagne Brut Rosé - France, Champagne (9/27/2013)
Very pink with a medium bead. A little bread and a lot of strawberries, roee petal and some raspberries. The palate is lively with acidity and bright strawberries. Hints of herbs as well. Good wine.
2010 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Botella - USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills (9/26/2013)
Mouth watering nose of cranberries, orange zest and some baking spices. The palate is bright and nicely tart with juicy red berries but no sense of sweetness. A great drink.
2005 Switchback Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Peterson Family Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley (9/25/2013)
Big nose with blueberries, chocolate and raspberries. The palate is oaky, thick and unctuous with ripe dark berries, beef and chocolate. Simple and delicious. Perfect for today with the crab and sage steak.
2007 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection - USA, California, Napa Valley (9/25/2013)
Not for everyone. The nose is full of chocolate and bing cherries. The palate is huge, thick and oily, with dark cherries and blueberries. Lots of tobacco and smokey oak. I like this, not everyone will.
2009 SonkinCellars Persona White Hawk/Alder Springs - USA, California (9/25/2013)
Oily nose, as in petroleum. The palate is thick, oily and oaky. Loads of raspberries, cinnamon, and vanillin. Long and smooth. Great finish. I have liked every persona I’ve had. The table loved it.
2010 Maybach Family Vineyards Chardonnay Eterium - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (9/25/2013)
The first two were oak bombs but this one is more restrained with lots of citrus notes, apricot and cooking herbs. A hint of butter but not much else screaming oak. I really enjoyed this with fried green tomatoes. Very refreshing.
2010 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon Corona Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville (9/25/2013)
The nose doesn’t give much but the palate is full of blueberries and smoke. Restrained in all aspects and begging for time. Not my bottle, so I can wait for it as should you.
2001 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia - Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja (9/22/2013)
From a 375. The nose is where its at for me. Meat, olive tapenade, earth. The palate is bright and acidic with some glyceriny feel up front but quickly swept by acid. Olive and pickling brine notes a bit of wood and bright tart berries. Sweeps itself clean with just a touch of gritty tannin. A food wine if there ever was one. Not my favored style but every so often I love a wine like this.
2010 GTS Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain (9/20/2013)
This wine needs time. It took about six hours to open up but when it did, BOOM. Big nose of dark berries, blueberries, chocolate, and some ash. The palate is big, thick and satisfying. Ripe red fruits, oak, smoke, baking spices. Delicious. Long. Some chewy tannins. I really like it.
2008 Domaine Huet Vouvray Demi-Sec Le Haut-Lieu - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray (9/17/2013)
Day one this was sharp and intense. Just a laser of apricot and honey. A few days in the fridge and the wine is transformed. The nose is amazing with white flowers, citrus peel, honey and even a hint of sage. The palate is clean and full of spiced honey, nectarine pit and more flowery notes. Delicious, crisp and long finish.
2010 Martinelli Pinot Noir Three Sisters Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (9/16/2013)
On day one soft and delicate. Day two and three see the wine gain weight dramatically. The nose is lush and full or ripe cherries, flowers and citrus notes. The palate is just toeing the line between ripe and acidic. I really like this. Long finish too.
2011 Martinelli Pinot Noir Zio Tony Ranch - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (9/16/2013)
Not my cup of tea, surprisingly. Delicate and soft with some hints of orange zest and bright berries. Heavier texture than the nose promises and I kept wishing it would fill out over three days but it stayed soft and flowery.
2008 Fairchild Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Sigaro - USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena (9/12/2013)
Intended to drink this over three days but killed it on day two. The nose seems to change constantly, throwing notes of tobacco, ash, mint, and dark fruit that is hard to describe. Reminds me of ripe plums and occasionally I get a whiff of orange zest. The palate moves a lot as well. Blackberries and plum notes, vanilla at times with some chewy tannins on day wine that soften significantly by day two. This is a thinking wine and one I love.
2010 Fairchild Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Sigaro - USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena (9/12/2013)
Intoxicating nose for such a young wine with ripe dark fruits, baking spices, and grilled/ashy notes. The palate is pretty big at this point with dark berries and crunchy acidity. Vanilla notes and very chewy tannins. The 05 had side by side was similar but a little less complex and more about the fruit, which has turned sweeter. Lots of potential.
2007 Kutch Pinot Noir Kanzler Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (9/6/2013)
The nose has some eucalyptus, earth and dark cherries. The palate is one of wet leaves and earth with hints of cherry and a blast of acid that did not mellow until day three, letting the fruit through. This will be a hell of a long lived wine.
2007 Marcassin Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (9/6/2013)
Interesting. It was colder than I usually drink it but the nose was great with licorice, baking spices, and great cherry. The palate, however was muted. The texture was good enough to drink on its own merit as it glided over the tongue but the fruit was not there much. This needed air and to warm up but one of my table mass loved it so I let them have the remaining half bottle to see what it’s like when it warms up a bit.
2008 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (9/6/2013)
Silly good, nose and palate. Lots of petrol that blows off and a bit of spritz on the palate that also dissipates. The nose has honey, apricot, and a hint of lemons. The palate is intense, sweet and very clean with tons of crisp honey. So crystalline and clean that while very young, it’s awesome at this stage.
1993 Domaine Huet Vouvray Moelleux 1ère Trie Le Haut-Lieu - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray (8/25/2013)
this somehow is way younger than the previous two. reticent nose with an amazing palate of honey, dried apricots, and the tension and lack of explosion is what I mean by younger than usual
2004 Marynissen Estates Riesling Icewine - Canada, Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Niagara-on-the-Lake VQA (8/22/2013)
Not very giving on the nose but the palate is intense with bright, tart yellow fruits piercing all the way to the throat and then opening up around the tongue with honey, apricots and dried peaches. The finish lasts forever. Needs to be a little colder than usual to tame the sweetness but man I really love the length. The only hint of its age is a mild brownish tint to the wine. Wow.
2008 Carlisle Petite Sirah Yorkville Highlands - USA, California, North Coast, Yorkville Highlands (8/22/2013)
Dark and brooding nose of warm dark berries. Oily in texture with unctuous ripe purple fruits. A bit gritty on the finish with a sense of warmth. Good wine if the fruit is a bit simple.
2010 Loring Wine Company Pinot Noir Clos Pepe Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills (8/22/2013)
A few days after the last bottle. No variation here
2005 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (8/17/2013)
A kick to the face of Brett at first dissipates quickly. The nose then reveals dark brambly fruits, Forrest floor, beef and soy. Sme savory elements. The palate (and it realize this is overused) screamed rustic to me, with dark, earthy fruit, a touch of iron, beef, coffee notes and more savory elements with a bit of grit. I really like this wine at this point but its got legs to spare.
2011 Turley Zinfandel Dragon - USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain (8/17/2013)
On day one the wine was tight and sour on the palate. Day two blossomed to show a nose of flowers, black pepper and red fruits. The palate opened
Up dramatically with juicy raspberries and some savory herbs. I like this a lot but ill drink my other bottle within a year. It changed very quickly.
2010 Loring Wine Company Pinot Noir Clos Pepe Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills (8/13/2013)
Typical profile of big black cherries. Still tightly wound but the usual oak and creaminess are there. Yum wines for chillier nights
2009 Alpha Omega Syrah Krupp Brothers Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley (8/9/2013)
This wine got progressively better over three days. The nose is deep and dark with smoke, crushed stones and black fruits. The palate has lots of savory elements, some beef, BBQ and smoke. Long and delicious, getting fruitier by the day.
1998 Château d’Yquem - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes (8/4/2013)
its yquem. tell tale mouth coating honey and peach wirh great acid. not the most complex yquem but it makes me smile.
2003 Clarendon Hills Syrah Brookman - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon (8/4/2013)
a bit of cat piss on the nose with dark berries and chocolate. the palate is still young but theres intense blueberries and beef. really long. delicious and lots of upside.
2005 Maybach Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Materium - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville (8/4/2013)
I love the nose with black cherries black berries and baking spices. the palate is deep and sweet with red berries and beef. seamless. delicious
2009 Ridge Geyserville - USA, California, Sonoma County (8/4/2013)
all the spice and black pepper you would expect. the palate is sharp and delineated with delicious raspberry and coiled fruits. this will go forever
NV Henriot Champagne Brut Rosé - France, Champagne (8/4/2013)
yeasty nose w cherries and a hint of citrus. the palate is not sweet but its very fruity w bright berries. very nice
2005 Château Suduiraut - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes (8/3/2013)
muted nose but great palate with a hint of banana, honey and some peaches. nice and long. young but good.
2005 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor (Private Reserve) - Chile, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto (8/3/2013)
smoke tar and wood on the nose. the palate is savory and very tarry. ok wine but missing fruit for me. meh.
2008 Aubert Pinot Noir Reuling Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (8/3/2013)
Orange peel, cranberries and cinnamon. The palate is crisp and crunchy. Loads if briggt berries. Nothing overripe or boozy. Delicious.
2010 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (8/3/2013)
amazing nose of blackberries, licorice, plums and baking spices. the palate is tight but with loads of fruit lurking. tense wine for now but a medley similar to the nose can be coaxed with vigorous swirling. will be amazing.
2010 Vineyard 29 Cabernet Sauvignon Cru - USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena (8/3/2013)
young and tight with crisp cranberries and a hint of cinnamon. this needs a lot of time but the stuffing is there.
2011 Joh. Jos. Prüm Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (8/3/2013)
very young but great notes of lychee, pear and a little honey. mild sweetness with some savory elements. very good wine.
2008 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (8/1/2013)
My friend who is a non wino asked for something sweet and fruity. She loved this and I had it recently and knew it was sweet, clean and fun without much complication. Usual sulphur that blows off. Delicious.
2006 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus-Ex Machina - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (7/27/2013)
Definitely a liqueurish nose to this. Some wood and sweet spice. The palate is lighter than I was expecting. Nice, clean forward red fruits with hints of smoke on the palate. Not my favorite deus but a very good wine nonetheless.
2006 Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain (7/27/2013)
Sadly my last bottle. Huge nose of ripe red and black berries with a hint of smoke. More sweet than savory on the palate with clean but young and tight fruit. Some hints of sweet spices but just wound up tight even if the intensity shows. Lay down for 5 more years.
