Monthly check-in: Cellar inventory reduction plan

January might be the worst wine buying month of the year. Certainly doesn’t help when Carlisle has a nice release.

January sucks for anyone who buys Berserker Day deals. It starts the year off with a big hole to try to climb out of.

True. I have abstained from wine on BD the past couple years for just that reason. This is where I load the freezer with steak for the year.

No space in my apartment so held strong in BD (except a bunch of beef and stems and canned fish…)

January always puts me deep in a hole I spend the rest of the year drinking my way out of. Berserker Day, well, let’s just say it was not Plan A for me the last 2 days.
In: +164. Out - 23. YTD: +141

Yikes.

My January 2026 summary and while not great, it could have been worse.

  • BOUGHT: +62

  • OPENED: -42

  • NET: +20

  • SINCE I STARTED in March 2025: +137

I don’t follow the “by purchase date” method, preferring the “by date added to inventory” method, so January was actually excellent, with 0 bottles in and 33 out (several of those were consumed earlier, but never decremented until I did a clean up the other day).

February and March are going to be train wrecks!

+24 for January which is actually moderate for that month. Everything should be downhill from here! But it doesn’t help that my wife has basically stopped drinking. And inside my Homer Simpson skull that seems to mean that I should drink more…

Oops. Make that +30.

After a number of net negative months, and one of the lowest purchase levels on record in 2025, I blew it in January. I totally blame Dry January for both the abysmal consumption, and the egegious purchases.

Consumed: 1 (we start Dry January on 1/2)
Purchased: 85
Net: +84

And the sad thing is I don’t even buy any Berserker Day wine!

Bubbles?

All the B’s - bubbles, burgundy, barolo, barbaresco.

Best as I can tell 10 out and 5 in excluding house white purchases that don’t go into inventory and don’t count

You are brave to provide actual cellar #s - I couldn’t bring myself to do that - it makes all the progress seem futile

2025 did well.

7 purchased.
91 consumed .

Jan 2026
0 purchased
6 consumed

Consumed includes down the drain white burg (2 in Jan)

Agree. In addition to it being overly complicated, a Magnum when I was young is like a 750 now. I’m buying almost only 375s.
