OUTSHINERY-ModusOperandi-CheeseAndCheers-Vicarious.jpg - Google Drive, I have a puffy sleeveless Patagonia vest… so I MUST be a winemaker!! LOL
For those of you who don’t know me, which is likely most of you, I’ve been making wine in Napa / Sonoma for 20 years now and came here from Dallas when I was 24 years old after falling in love with wine while working as a waiter in fine dining there. You can check out my full bio here if you’d like: Winemaker Bio 2022.pdf - Google Drive

I have 2 offers for you today…

  • Vicarious “On Demand” Tasting Experience “VoD”

  • 2018 Vicarious Cabernet Sauvignon + 2021 Rose of Pinot Noir - Bacigalupi Vineyard

All wines in this offer to you Berserkers are at 20% off using promo code “berserker”. You’re welcome to try one or both!

Now let me describe these offerings to you…
OPTION #1Vicarious “On Demand” Experience An in home wine tasting experience of 4 Napa/Sonoma wines and over 3 hours of entertaining and educational videos that walk you through the wines one by one.
Hosted by a Napa Valley winemaker, we’re pulling back the curtain on winemaking, the wine industry, grape growing, and wine tasting.

We’ve structured these videos to give you (as close to as possible) the exact same tasting experience you’d get if you were right here with us in Napa.

In some ways, this experience is even better than being in person at our Napa tasting room as we’re able to use video, motion graphics, and other digital resources to pull back the curtain on the winemaking and grape growing process, the business of running a winery, flavor profiles, and food pairing recipes specifically paired to these wines by a French Laundry trained chef (currently the executive chef at Farm at Carneros Inn), and the history and unique climates of Napa and Sonoma.

With each video you’ll enjoy a fascinating, in-depth wine tasting experience for the particular style of Vicarious wine (chardonnay, pinot noir, red blend or cabernet sauvignon) you’ve selected for that tasting.

I spent almost a year of my life (and a lot of money!) putting this together and am very proud of it.
Have a look at our intro videohttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1dmRaNwUooCfhXzR3H7kKbD0lDChmMO85/view?usp=sharingThose who have tried this experience have sent back rave reviews on both the wines and the experience. They also loved the fact that we offer 3 size options…

4oz Bottles - perfect for a single person tasting… 1 glass of each wineSmall Box Holiday.jpg - Google Drive8oz Bottles - perfect for a couple who each want a glass of each wineMedium Box Holiday.jpg - Google DriveAnd 4 Full Size Bottles - perfect for a group to enjoy all in 1 evening or a couple who want to split up the experiences/wines over multiple daysBlack Box Holiday.jpg - Google Drive whole point is that you can go at your pace… the experience is chopped up into 6 videos that you can consume ON DEMAND whenever you want!
These are great options for gifts as its educational, entertaining, and the price is right as where else can you gift wine AND 3 hours of winemaker hosted video content for less than $100??

This wine is the definition of elegance… from the pale rose color reminiscent of Provence, to the light floral aromatics and flavors… bright acidity, and clean - refreshing finish… we couldn’t be more proud of this wine. Another latecomer to the Preview Forum, and a Newbie this year!

I’ll be posting tasting notes later tonight!

I was happy to sample these wines for Modus Operandi / Vicarious. The wines arrived shortly after the holidays and were stood up in my cellar for about two weeks, and were sampled without decanting. The Vicarious wines were sampled together and revisited several times over a period of about 3 hours, so they did get a chance to breathe and unwind. They were then re-corked, kept cool, and sampled again on day #2. The Modus Operandi wines were only sampled on day #1 but, again, were revisited multiple times over several hours.

Note: Looking at the offer Jason just posted, I should clarify that the two Modus Operandi wines I sampled were not included in this Berserker Day offer. But, I’m including the notes here so folks can get some insight into those, in case anyone is interested in buying them off of the Modus Operandi website.

The Vicarious wines came in a 4-pack with very attractive packaging and a QR code to access online content for a sort of ‘virtual tasting’ experience. The videos offered good information about the regions the wines come from, the grapes, a bit about the winemaking, and some other tidbits from Jason. I think the content would be especially appreciated by who are newer to wine and are looking to learn more. In fact, the whole 4-bottle package would be a nice gift for someone getting into wine and interested in exploring.

On to the wines…

2019 Vicarious Sonoma Coast Chardonnay – Brilliant pale lemon in the glass, this is initially reserved on the nose but eventually offers up scents of white peach, pear, and lime. Maybe a little white flower in there, as well. The palate shows green apple, lemon, stone, and almond. Happily (to my palate, at least), no butter. This is nice and dry, with light-to-medium body, lively acidity, and a clean, crisp finish. I’m not a big Chardonnay drinker, but I enjoyed this one and could see it having a lot of versatility as a food companion. 14% ABV.

2019 Vicarious Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir – Clear, light ruby in the glass. The nose initially shows plenty of red fruits – wild strawberry, red currant, some sour cherry – along with rose and a hint of brown spice (cinnamon?). With air, and again on day #2, the nose evolves to offer more savory elements, which are echoed on the palate. There, I found the same red fruits, complemented by touches of dried herb and some welcome acidity. This is medium-bodied, strikes a nice line between fruit and non-fruit elements, and comes across as well made. Long and clean on the finish. 14% ABV.

2019 Vicarious Napa Valley Red Wine – In the glass, this is a translucent dark maroon color. The nose is quite pronounced, with blackcurrant, plum, and violet notes most prominent. On the palate, I taste plum, cassis, black coffee, pipe tobacco, and a dash of black pepper. With air, the Syrah in the blend is more evident, with smoked meat appearing on both the nose and palate. Day #2 shows much the same, although both vanilla and raisin notes join on the nose. This is full-bodied and quite flavorful but, like the preceding wines, has good acidity to keep things from feeling heavy or flabby. The finish is fairly complex and has good length. 15% ABV.

2018 Vicarious Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon – This is the darkest wine so far, pouring an opaque deep red-into-purple. Like the Red Wine, the Cabernet is effusive on the nose, giving off scents of blackberry, black cherry, tar, and peppercorn. The palate is similarly dark in tone, with boysenberry and blackberry complicated by tobacco, earth, and some spicy oak and vanilla notes. With air, cedar/humidor notes emerge on the nose and the palate shows a little of the black cherry that was initially present in the aroma. Full-bodied, with a long, complex, satisfying finish. There’s notable improvement on day #2, suggesting this one will benefit from some time in the cellar. 14.5% ABV.

2020 Modus Operandi Dalla Gasperina Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc – Brilliant straw in color, like sunshine in a glass. There’s plenty of citrus fruit, pineapple, and pleasant fresh grass and floral notes on the nose, letting you know this is definitely Sauv Blanc, but there’s not a hint of cat pee or asparagus to be found. The palate offers grapefruit, preserved lemon, stone, and a faint honeydew note (without the overt sweetness). While I find some Sauv Blancs to be excessively acidic, this one is not. It’s fresh, engaging, and ends with a clean, dry finish. I found myself wishing for seared sea scallops as I was tasting this. Very nice. 15% ABV.

2019 Modus Operandi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon – Similar to the 2018 Vicarious Cab, this is quite dark in the glass – opaque and almost velvety purple. It’s assertive on the nose, giving up ripe blackberry, plum, and summer blueberry scents. The palate initially echoes the nose, but shifts darker with air, adding gravel, black olive, and warm spice elements to the rich fruit. As with the other wines tasted, there’s a decent level of acidity present, keeping this from ever getting ponderous. Instead, it comes across as full-bodied and lush yet well-balanced. The tannins are more prominent than in the 2018 Vicarious Cab and could use a year or two to integrate a bit more, but this is a definite step up from that wine. Given the quality of this Cabernet, I’d be interested in trying the Modus Operandi single-vineyard cabs sometime. 15.5% AVB.

This was an enjoyable set of wines to sample, and a nice introduction to a winery I was previously not familiar with. The hallmark here seems to be cleanly made, well-balanced wines that could be enjoyed on their own or at the dinner table. While they’re “modern” in style, they all have good acidity levels and none of them come across as hot, gloopy, or excessive in any way. Well done.

Thanks for the notes. What are you buying based on your experiences?

Hey Jason, welcome to the clubhouse.
I really liked your craftsmanship during the old Coleman Nicole days.
Looking forward to tomorrow.

I was also able to preview the wines:

2019 Vicarious Sonoma Coast Chardonnay – Golden hued - notes of pineapple and lemon. No butter notes. Light bodied with some acid to balance. We don’t drink Chardonnay, but this is a nice wine. 14% ABV.

2019 Vicarious Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir – Pale ruby in the glass. Cherry notes predominate. Very light in the palate. I like “bigger” Pinots, but this is a very easy drinking wine. 14% ABV.

2019 Vicarious Napa Valley Red Wine – Dark maroon in color. Dark fruits predominate. Black currant and some cherry. Notes of pepper and tobacco. Medium finish. Very nice mouthfeel. 15% ABV.

2018 Vicarious Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon – Dark red/purple in color. Creme de Cassis, tobacco, chocolate and expresso predominate. Tannins are present and integrating - this needs a couple more years to hit its peak Very nice wine. 14.5% ABV.

These two wines were not in the offer posted:

2020 Modus Operandi Dalla Gasperina Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc – Bright yellow in appearance. Very well integrated acidity with notes of Lychee and pineapple. 15% ABV.

2019 Modus Operandi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon – Dark purple in the glass. Dark fruits predominate. Chocolate, cloves and a hint of licorice. A very young wine - tannins are quite noticeable. This needs a few more years and then it will hit it’s glory. 15.5% AVB

I thought that the VOD tasting was well done and we enjoyed watching.

I first heard of Modus Operandi from a somm at Mise en Place here in Tampa (who described it as the winery he was most excited about) and joined their wine list shortly thereafter. Unfortunately I had to drop off a couple of years back strictly due to financial reasons at the time, but I still have a couple of Modus bottles in the cellar waiting for the right moment. Jason makes some truly excellent wines and you absolutely will not regret buying from his offer!

Thank you very much Peter!

Wow, thanks a ton Nicholas! That Somm’s name was Dave Madera. Good dude. He got my attention with all the people he sent my way so I called the restaurant and asked for him by name, made friends, and I sent him a 3L to thank him. He’s visited me in Napa a few times too.

Guys, I don’t know why the videos AND links aren’t working… they did yesterday… just type in the url www.moduswines.com/store or www.vicariouswines.com

I don’t f’ing know…

I used to be a member at MO. Great wine and even better people. Highly recommend vicarious.

Thank you very much!!

Just coming back around to this. I’m a huge Napa cab fan - they make up the largest segment of my cellar. Usually that’s what I look for on Berserker Day. This year, though, I decided I’m going to branch out and grab some Grenache, Rhone blends, and other things my cellar is lighter on. Were it not for that self-imposed moratorium, I would definitely buy the Cabernet. It’s a terrific value at the discounted price.

Also, although I haven’t had the rosé, I think it’s a safe bet that will be quite delicious, given the overall style of Jason’s wines (i.e., clean and balanced with good acidity levels). I’d be surprised if you ordered either one of those wines and we’re disappointed.

Hope that’s helpful.
