I am visiting Germany later this year and making a stop in Bernkastel-Kues for 2 days. Looking for wineries to visit that are authentic, willing to take you through the vineyard etc. I’m a fan of JJ prum in the region so hope to visit there but other recommendations would be appreciated. One catch is it will be Sunday one day I am there so also would appreciate input if these wineries are open Sunday.
Can be difficult to predict who is going to take you through the vineyards, as it may depend on their schedule that day, how well you get along, proximity of vineyards, etc.
Having a personal connection also helps. But then it also depends who you want to visit.
For Sunday I highly recommend Molitor. They will not take you through the vineyard but it is a very nice tasting. Feel free to mention my name if Daniel is there.
In the Middle Mosel you can drive into and around the vineyards yourself and there are lots of walking paths. I would suggest that if you want to see vineyards.
The vineyards are very spread out and the tasting rooms are often nowhere near their vineyards. During harvest you see lots of tractors driving along the roads with trailers of grapes going from vineyard to winery. But if you have a map, you can pull off at any of the most famous vineyards and walk through them. If it’s just before harvest, you can get a sampling of the vintage!
Dr Loosen did a very nice tasting for us in English with little notice. Not sure about Sunday though. Prum will not see you unless you have a connection, but you can taste their wines at the Rieslinghaus for a modest fee.
Thank you all for your input! On an unrelated note, I will be making my way to Reims afterward for an afternoon and would also appreciate 1-2 places we could go, possibly somewhere that offers dinner. Appreciate you all!
