Mezioni Vigna in Trentino - where are the wines?

In Trentino there is a long list of Menzioni Vigna (geographical indications of single vineyards) but practically no bottles with there menzioni on them? Why?

IMO because the overall quality and prices aren’t yet high enough to leverage the cachet of a single vineyard label. Cru labelling works well in a region where standards are high and reliable, such that the nuances between different vineyards can shine. In Trentino the producer is still way more important.

The good producers can be very fine indeed, but for too many, this would feel like adding the icing whilst the cake is still baking in the oven.

Those good producers may even choose ‘own brand’ designations, to avoid association with lesser producers using the same vineyard menzione. By way of example, Foradori’s front label for their standard Teroldego doesn’t mention Rotaliano, even though that is its appellation. I recall they even dropped the grape name from that label!

No history of using them. There could be some value to them, identifying for example the vineyards that lie above the historic path of the Adige river where the soil is rich in layered stone. The best wines tend to come from this stip of land. Every vineyard has a name. We have apple orchards and they too are named, could be vineyards: Brolio, Croce, Ranga. You gottta be able to tell me people where to go or where you’ll be. In our case there is little difference between the orchards, production wise, though some are generally better than others.

I only took a brief look at the listing, mostly just attribution to historic ownership. I didn’t see the Dal Piaz cru, guess we’ll have to apply for that.

I’m not sure Foradori’s Teroldego is Rotaliano anymore. I’m sure it wasn’t at some point, when the appellation switched to Dolomiti, since the wine included juice from outside the appellation, up in the foothills closer to Trento if memory serves correctly.

Thank you. In the meantime I added them to weinlagen-info even though I prefer adding vineyards that appear on labels. If you know of other named vineyards that in your opinion should appear in weinlagen-info, just drop me a message. I’ll add the Dal Paz if you help me spotting it.
Have a look Weinlagen
