I thought fans of this house might want to know.
New releases recently tasted at Benvenuto Brunello showed better than most in 2018s mediocre vintage. Lots of exciting 2021 rosso wines to look forward to for those that are fans.

I thought Illy owned MastroJanni years ago. When I was there five years ago there were Illy trademark signs up everywhere
Yeah, I don’t think this is new news either. Pretty sure this was at least 4 years ago they bought it.
The 2019 Rosso was killer, which would have fallen under their ownership in terms of production.
It was Illy Group, headed by Riccardo Illy, that bought Mastrojanni 14 years ago, in 2008, according to this 2019 story. Riccardo’s brother Francesco acquired Ripi before that.
No news? OK.
Except I’m here, and this is big news. By relinquishing his shares in Illy, Francesco is the sole owner of Ripi and Mastrojanni, making him the new prince of Montalcino, with 70+Ha of Brunello, and 200Ha+ in Montalcino; single biggest landholder in the region now.
Sorry I didn’t have time to type it all out earlier, busy program.
Good to see you Tim and hope you are well. Cheers!
Thanks for the clarification, Tim. I didn’t come across anything in English on the latest transaction.
Makes a lot more sense now. The subject line doesn’t quite match the news you are reporting, which is what threw me (and some others here) off.
That’s pretty big news actually, given that his style of winemaking really lends itself to the style of Brunello that appeals to a more serious collector.
That’s good to hear. I’m not a serious collector of it by any means, but I’m more critical of modern sangiovese than modernist nebbiolo
Oh ok, that’s interesting. I love their wines. Let’s see what he does with it.
What’s the style of Ripi? I don’t know those wines at all.
