I had a taste of this last night…all I can say is wow, it’s one hell of a spirit.
What is the difference (if any) between L’Or and L’Or de Jean Martell?
There seems to be a price difference from 1,000 to 4,000.
The bottle that we had last night looked like this -

But there are other bottles that look like this…

Save that bottle! The one you drank from (Martell L’Or) is Baccarat crystal sealed in 24-carat gold. The Cognac itself was bottled in the 1990’s and is a blend of eaux-de-vie predominantly from the Grande Champagne area, and the rest from Borderies, averaging (at the time of bottling) around 60-years-old. It is also a collector’s item.
L’Or de Jean Martell, (the more contemporary-looking bottle made by Cristal de Sevres), is a blend of very old (100yrs avg) eaux-de-vie taken from the areas of Borderies and Grande Champagne. This was last bottled around 2010, suggested to retail for $3,600, and limited to 120 bottles. Borderies and Grande Champagne are the best appellations in Cognac, IMHO.
Kinda interesting, but Martell has been around for a few hundred years. Napoleon used to drink it, Churchill, rich people on the Queen Mary were said to have been drinking it on the way to America… yadda yadda. The company was family-owned way until 1988 when they sold to Seagrams, then that switched hands to Pernod Ricard in the early 2000’s.
As for price variation, i can only speculate… the cheaper listings came in by gray market? the U.S. dollar vs Euro when purchased? the store doesn’t want to sit on these? Or who knows?? Dunno.
That must have been bomb!
Cheers,
Veronica,
Thank you for the info.
Are these basically the same “brand” but just a different blend?
You are welcome, Michael! They stopped making Martell L’Or a while back… slightly different brand and most likely a different blend.
Best!
