Mark Taylor's Annual 'Epic' Bordeaux Tasting Event (2006 vintage)

Once again, several Berserkers (myself included) were invited by the ever-generous Mark Taylor to join in the annual Bordeaux tasting, this year’s feature being the 2006 vintage. Prior to this event I couldn’t recall drinking or tasting a single 2006 Bordeaux, truly, so it was definitely full blind for me, going in, though expectations of me knowing squat are always low, regardless. I had high hopes as Burgundy in 2006 is drinking quite well now, but unfortunately for this tasting, VERY few of the wines were in a drinking window of any sort, most were tannic monsters (we’ll get into detail below, me and others from the event), though the quality does seem to be there. These wines were all double decanted at 10am (finished decanting and poured back into the original (rinsed) bottles by 11am) and the tastings started at 4pm, so there was plenty of air on each.

(all wines served single blind, as always)

My useless notes below (though I do refer back to them when tasting a Bordeaux I know I’ve covered in these events), hoping for better notes from @RKatz and @dcornutt, but also @Eric_LeVine has posted his, and they are fantastic - link here

DAY 1

FLIGHT 1:
(Pavie, Pavie Macquin, Beychevelle, Duhart Milon, Pontet Canet, La Lagune)

Quick note on this flight - SUPER tannic, we were all a bit surprised by it. Most were rather disjointed/clunky, almost like a fresh release tasting at UGC for me, where the assault on your palate was often overwhelming

1 - dark aromatics, black olive, coffee, toasted, palate bright profile but dark fruit, dusty tannins, finish carries a touch of ripe/stewed fruit, bit sharp/graphite, earthy - I guessed Pontet Canet (because of the strong coffee note), was La Lagune. My 5th, group’s 6th

2 - similar style as 1, bit more ripe dark fruit forward, stony, modern, palate a bit glossy, nice structure, lots of wood, drinking well but could use time for fruit to integrate with tannins - I guessed Pavie Macquin, was correct. My 6th, group’s 2nd

3 - spring water, coffee nose, cedar/char, bit of horse poop on nose, structured, fruit very shy, some black cherry emerges a bit, mint (I guessed La Lagune, was Beychevelle) My 2nd, group’s 1st

4- hint of balsamic, brighter than others, floral, complex nose, maybe some oyster/seashell, silky, nice acid, nice fruit overall, dusty, good texture, least ‘ripe’ , very nice - I guessed Beychevelle, was Pontet Canet. My 1st (@Robert.A.Jr will be aghast), group’s 3rd

5 - essence seems a bit brighter, color a bit advanced, Merlot characteristics, violet/rose, lovely, polished, very grippy as well but some sweetness, dark fruit, long finish - I guessed Duhart Milon (had no experience with this wine previously, any vintage), it was Pavie My 4th, group’s 5th

6 - initial blast of milk chocolate, different from others, blueberry compote, very unique nose, complex, loads of graphite, silky, - I guessed Pavie based on the blueberry and chocolate, but it was Duhart Milon. My 3rd, Group’s 4th

FLIGHT 2:
Lafite, Mouton, La Mish, LLC, Cos, Ducru

1 - first whiff of this first wine you know it’s a different class than the other flight, classic qualities but delivered with perfect balance, olive oil, saddle leather, beautiful fruit profile, impactful but delivered with weight and grace, nice acid - I guessed Mouton, was Lafite. My 2nd, group’s 1st

*2 - more classic qualities on the nose, polished, higher grade, fascinates me how a nose can have balance like this one, nothing sticks out, but everything is there. If I had to pull something specific out of the balance of classic qualities it would be cinnamon, bit of mint, beautiful satiny mouthfeel with sweet red fruit, more acid than tannic structure, nice finish, very long, gorgeous elegant wine - I guessed Lafite, was Ducru (yay! I will buy this!) My 1st, group’s 5th (tie) (Note on this wine - we pour two bottles because of group size, our side had a good bottle, the other had a flawed bottle, so the scores are quite off, as we had plenty from our side rating it 10-3 and the other side heavily 5 and 6)

3 - Again, elegant, balanced nose, bit herbal, coffee, again beautiful fruits, more integrated, great acid, drying tannins on the finish carry some of the fruit - I guessed Cos, was Mouton. My 3rd, group’s 5th (tie) (ouch for Mouton)

4 - Bit fresher, very silky, mint. More drying, nice red/black fruited, not yet ready but massive potential - I guessed La Mish and was correct. My 5th, group’s 2nd

5 - A bit shy, more tannins, maybe SLIGHT hint of TCA, less polished again, blue fruited, shorter finish - I guessed LLC and was correct. My 6th, group’s 2nd

6- Different from others, graphite, brett, little fruit on nose, nice red fruit peeking through, components there, just not quite developed yet - I guessed Ducru, was Cos. My 4th, group’s 3rd.

DAY TWO

FLIGHT 1:
Pavie Decesse, Quinault LEnclos, Saint Pierre, Lynch Bages, Calon Segur, Troplong Mondot

I found this flight similar to flight 1 on day 1, tannic and chewy, lacking integration for the most part but still some enjoyment to be had…but I’d just wait on every one of these, at LEAST 5 more years.

1 - perfumed, meaty, dark fruited, black tea, floral and complex nose but perhaps a bit oxidized with some stewed fruit, soft palate, sharp graphite, soups bois, not much fruit but what I get is ripe/stewed - I guessed Pavie Decesse, was Troplong Mondot. My 6th, group’s 1st

2 - violets, olive oil, saddle leather, some nice sweet fruit integrated into the round, full tannins, red/black cherry, nice acid/texture, long finish which has a bit of florals to it - I guessed Calon Segur, was Quinault L’Enclos. My 3rd, group’s 5th

3 - shy but elegant, dark red fruit, cedar, fresh nose, almost an oily texture, slight grip but well structured overall, one that seems like it’s all there but not ready - I guessed Troplong Mondot, was Pavie Decesse. My 4th, group’s 4th

4 - graphite dominant, plum, stony nose, bright but unripe fruit, bit bitter to the finish - I guessed Quinault L’Enclos, was Lynch Bages. My 5th, group’s 3rd

5 - mint, violet, cassis nose, just feels higher grade than the others, big fruit and structure but balanced, a bold wine, very long finish - I guessed Lynch Bages, was Calon Segur. My 1st, group’s 2nd (by one point!)

6 - really shy, classic but faint nose, nice balanced fruit on the attack, starts red turns blue, good acid, dusty tannins, long finish that carries some of the fruit - I guessed Saint Pierre, was correct. My 2nd, group’s 6th

FLIGHT 2:
Latour, Margaux, HB, Leoville Barton, Montrose, Pichon Longueville Lalande

1- beautiful fruit profile on the nose, lovely weight, sharp graphite and cassis, bold wine - guessed Leoville Barton, was correct. My 4th, group’s 6th

2 - bright and fresh, complex nose, lifts your spirit, makes you smile, floral nose, just keep your nose in it and you keep getting rewarded, but it did close up a bit in the glass, gorgeous sweet red/black fruit profile immediately on the palate, structured, not yet integrated, gorgeously made, not yet ready and clearly built for the long haul - guessed Margaux, was Montrose. My 3rd, group’s 5th

3 - beautiful classic balanced nose, slightly modern style? satiny, bright fruited, tannic - I guessed Montrose, was Pichon Lalande. My 6th, group’s 4th

4 - touch of cinnamon, green, graphite, similar on palate, nice sweeter fruit profile very long finish - I guessed Haut Brion, was correct. My 5th, group’s 3rd.

5 - coffee, graphite, dark fruited, Brett, gorgeous fruit profile on the palate, explosive and rewarding, bright, acid rather than tannins, polished finish, wonderful - I guessed Latour, was Margaux. (whenever I have the opportunity to drink First Growths in these single-blind flights I always prefer Margaux, so next time I have to base my guess only on my ranking) My 1st, group’s 2nd

6 - clean/fresh, spring water, blue fruit, dark cherry nose, another big, rewarding wine, dark fruit, spice - I guessed Pichon Lalande, was Latour. My 2nd, group’s 1st

2006 Bordeaux seems destined for the long haul. Thank you, Mark, as always, for the opportunity to learn while enjoying wine with friends, as many of the regulars to these events have become for me.

Nice report

2006 BORDEAUX COURTESY OF MARK TAYLOR - Atlanta, GA (5/3/2025-5/4/2025)

Fresh off his 97th birthday, Mark Taylor welcomed an assemblage of Atlanta locals and some travelers.

This was my 8th pilgrimage (2012, 2013, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025) to Atlanta to taste Bordeaux courtesy of Mark.

Reputed as a mixed vintage, we did see some highs and lows. On the whole though, there were some very solid wines among the upper echelons.

All wines were served in single-blind flights of 6.

This first flight was a bit variable with many of the wines featuring harder tannins. Many a speaker mentioned "this would be great with a steak."

To me the Beychevelle towered over the rest, absolute textbook Bordeaux. The Pontet Canet opened up pretty nicely as well. The most "ready" of the wines was the Duhart Milon.

  • 2006 Château La Lagune - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc (5/3/2025)
Tobacco, gunpowder, horse. Firm, leafy and dusty. Nice black fruit with good weight.
My #3 and the group #6.
    Guessed incorrectly as Duhart Milon.
  • 2006 Château Pavie Macquin - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (5/3/2025)
RIPE, grilled plums, chocolate moving to a restrained palate of red fruit, very focused, pure, rather dusty on the longer finish.
My #6 and the group #2.
    Guessed correctly as Pavie Macquin.
  • 2006 Château Beychevelle - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (5/3/2025)
Mmm, , black fruit, smoky, lots of barrel char, tobacco. Very charming. Just loved this, classic, feels Pauillac, Firm but everything in place. Textbook Bordeaux. Mineral, smoky, red fruit, long.
My #1 and the group #1.
    Guessed incorrectly as Pontet Canet.
  • 2006 Château Pontet-Canet - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (5/3/2025)
A bit shy at first, some pungency, cassis, leafy, dry, getting more depth, herbal, lovely with a nice spine.
My #2 and the group #3.
    Guessed incorrectly as Beychevelle.
  • 2006 Château Pavie - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (5/3/2025)
Very oxidative with fig and dried fruit, coffee. Freshens a bit in the glass with the dried fruit notes moving to the background. Massive palate, tannic, chocolate covered cherries, long, saturated and firm.
My #4 and the group #5.
    Guessed correctly as Pavie.
  • 2006 Château Duhart-Milon - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (5/3/2025)
Marine nose, red fruit, a touch moldy moving to a more green mint and herbal character. Fairly round, easy on the palate, gentle red fruit, softer tannins, the most read of the flight with no need to wait.
My #5 and the group #4.
    Guessed incorrectly as La Lagune.

This flight was a huge step up. The tannins were there, but the wines were much more balanced (well the Las Cases was tannic as always). The Lafite in particular was a stunner.

  • 2006 Château Lafite Rothschild - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (5/3/2025)
Slightly lifted, hints of tobacco and cedar, graphite. This goes from aromatically reserved to explosive, easily the best nose of the night, mint starting to pop. Wow, tight, mineral, red fruit, a pure laser, Reserved but regal.
My #1 and the group #1.
    Guessed correctly as Lafite.
  • 2006 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (5/3/2025)
Eww, weird, pickle barrel, pretty clearly oxidized, just a bad bottle. I did hazard a taste, and this had a lot of plummy, dark fruit. It is a bit stewed and cooked but has lots of structure.
My #6 (NR really) and tied for the group #5 (which was not fair since half the room had a bad bottle.)
Guessed incorrectly as Mouton (based on structure alone). (NR/flawed)
  • 2006 Château Mouton Rothschild - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (5/3/2025)
Mmm, tangy and pungent, sweet and sour, quite classic with a bit of red fruit.
My #5 and the group #5.
    Guessed incorrectly as Ducru.
  • 2006 Château La Mission Haut-Brion - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan (5/3/2025)
Mmm, smoky, hint of mint. I immediately wrote "LMHB?" but did not trust my initial impression... Wow, seamless, silky, pure, very fine tannins, firm.
My #3 and the group #4.
    Guessed incorrectly as Cos d'Estournel.
  • 2006 Château Léoville Las Cases - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (5/3/2025)
Bright, floral and smoky. Some soy, quite deep, quite a tannic finish, mineral. That reads like LLC if I actually would look at my own notes...
My #4 and the group #2.
    Guessed incorrectly as La Mission.
  • 2006 Château Cos d'Estournel - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe (5/3/2025)
Mmm, tobacco, deep, bretty. Wow, just wow, could be Ducru? Lovely and dark although a little candied.
My #2 and the group #3.
    Guessed incorrectly as Las Cases.

Much like on Saturday, the first flight was on the whole a bit more lean and less balanced, tannins on display. Although that was lessened since 3 of 6 were St. Emilion which on the whole were more approachable.

  • 2006 Château Troplong Mondot - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (5/4/2025)
Some cocoa, coffee and tar with roasted notes. Chocolate and cherry, quite bright.
My #5 and the group #1.
I knew this was right bank but incorrectly guessed Pavie Decesse.
  • 2006 Château Quinault L'Enclos - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (5/4/2025)
Smoky with tobacco, rather stalky, fairly lean and mineral.
My #6 and the group #5.
    Incorrectly guessed as Calon Segur.
  • 2006 Château Pavie Decesse - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (5/4/2025)
Fairly piercing with some mint and an almost grassy note. Juicy, red fruit, tannic but with brightness.
My #3 and the group #4.
I knew this was right bank but incorrectly guessed as Quinalt L'Enclos.
  • 2006 Château Lynch-Bages - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (5/4/2025)
Mmmmm, meaty. Some spicy green, firm. Cabernet? Bright rather red fruit profile.
My #1 and the group #3.
    Incorrectly guessed as Troplong Mondot.
  • 2006 Château Calon-Ségur - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe (5/4/2025)
Mmmm, graphite, cedar, seems like classic Pauillac and has to be left bank. A lean palate that clearly will take some work to open up, but this is as classic as it gets.
My #2 and the group #2.
I incorrectly guessed Lynch Bages but did have a feeling this might be the Calon Segur (the only other likely choice).
  • 2006 Château Saint-Pierre - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (5/4/2025)
Not getting much on the nose. Dense, dark and dusky. Black fruit and some mint. Stern.
My #4 and the group #6.
Correctly guessed as Saint-Pierre based on the seemingly Saint Julien profile.

As on Saturday, this final flight was unreal, moving from strength to strength. Stunning wines.

  • 2006 Château Léoville Barton - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (5/4/2025)
Mmmm, spiny, Petit Verdot? Some green. Beautiful, mineral, precise. Someone else described it as "soft and sneaky," and this was probably the smallest and finest wine of the flight, just lovely.
My #5 and the group #6.
    Incorrectly guessed as Pichon Lalande.
  • 2006 Château Montrose - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe (5/4/2025)
Wow, explosive, barnyard, big, brooding. Mmmm, what a palate, graphite and gunpowder. Dense.
My #4 and the group #5.
    Correctly guessed as Montrose.
  • 2006 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (5/4/2025)
Much brighter, red fruit nose, lifted, floral, silky, even more red fruit on the palate, just gorgeous, a stunning wine. The most ethereal of the flight.
My #1 and the group #4.
    I thought it was Margaux.
  • 2006 Château Haut-Brion - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan (5/4/2025)
At first I got root beer and Todd thought cinnamon. Smoky, roasted earth, mineral, dry and dusty.
My #6 and the group #3.
    Correctly guessed as Haut-Brion.
  • 2006 Château Margaux - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux (5/4/2025)
Ahhh, leafy, mint, spicy, tobacco. Very structured a beast. A lot of brett.
My #2 and the group #2.
    Incorrectly guessed as Latour.
  • 2006 Château Latour Grand Vin - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (5/4/2025)
Wow, explosive, spicy, tobacco, cedar, exotic, leaner and more tannic, a great flavor profile.
My #3 and the group #1.
    Incorrectly guessed as Leoville Barton.

Thank you again to Mark, Judith and all!

of note, Eric and I sat next to each other on the 2nd day and dude TOTALLY copied my homework!

Excellent notes, both of you. I don’t have very many 2006s in the cellar, but I had a gorgeous La Fleur-Petrus recently. Sensational. An outlier, apparently

Fabulous notes from both Todd and Eric.
I will get my thoughts up in a day or two when I have a break.
It was a fun event. These wines are a little tough to analytically taste due to the tannins. The delicious acidity and balance of the first growths really stole the show to me. Still really shocked by the Beychevelle on day one. That one really showed beautifuly amongst a group of exceptionally tannic wines.

Great notes and write up on this… thanks for sharing

Makes me want to crack a 375ml of 06 Haut Brion.

Is there any reason why there are no Pomerols at all in the line up? It feels like an omission to me?

I have enjoyed 2006 Pomerols quite a lot (and also Ch. Magdelaine)

Thanks for the great notes

Mark supplies all the Bordeaux, and he certainly doesn’t have every wine, or every appellation each year. This was the first time we tasted Quinaul L’Enclos or Duhart-Milon, in fact, though most of the rest of the tasting events have similar wines, based on whatever vintage (or sometimes a vertical but I think those are past us, unfortunately - I did much better on those than the horizontals)

As Todd says, we taste what Mark Taylor opens from his cellar. We do get Pomerol occasionally: (just from the ones I have attended and taken notes on)

  • In 2024 with the 2004’s we had Vieux Chateau Certan as well as Château Gazin Pomerol.
  • In 2021 with the 2005’s we had Client as well as Château Gazin Pomerol.
  • Way back in 2012 (my first tasting) with the 1982’s we had Lafleur, Le Gay, and L’Evangile

Thanks for the notes - I only have some Montrose, LLC, and Pavie Macquin in the cellar. Of those the Pavie Macquin is the one that is pretty approachable now. LLC is still hard as nails - Montrose have not tried in a while. I just realized I met Mark about 10 years ago while having Dinner at La Grotta - we brought a couple of older Latours (88 and 98) and Antonio brought out a Durand and then mentioned the guy who invented it was in the restaurant that night and introduced me to him. Sounds like a fun and (as usual when blind) humbling experience.

So happy to be at this fabulous event. Mary Margaret McCamick MW, Charles Curtis MW, Eric Asimov and Michal McNeill MS were the leaders of the tasting of interesting 2006 Bordeauxs from both banks. I can’t easily follow Todd’s and Eric’s wonderful evaluations but here are my notes. For the rankings etc., just take a look at Eric’s or Todd’s notes.

FLIGHT ONE- DAY ONE

• 2006 Château La Lagune - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc (5/3/2025)
Showed a réticent nose for some time. Darker fruits on the palate and nose. Some element of forest floor. Never really unwound for me. Not my favorite.

• 2006 Château Pavie Macquin - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (5/3/2025)
Very ripe fruit here with elements of coffee. Plenty of intensity of fruit but also lots of tannin. This one has some length.

• 2006 Château Beychevelle - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (5/3/2025)
Beautiful nose that at first showed coffee notes, cedar and beautiful red fruits. Gorgeous texture here but some tannins on the finish. Class of this whole group.

• 2006 Château Pontet-Canet - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (5/3/2025)
Beautful darker fruits. Pencil shavings and cassis. This one is tannic but there is plenty to like on the finish. Great acidity.

• 2006 Château Pavie - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (5/3/2025)
Extremely dark ripe fruit. Huge in the mouth. Monolithic in many ways. This one just never took off for me.

• 2006 Château Duhart-Milon - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (5/3/2025)
This was my least favorite. Herbal darker fruit on the nose and palate. Maybe a little underripe.

FLIGHT TWO- DAY ONE

• 2006 Château Lafite Rothschild - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (5/3/2025)
Wow! Classic gorgeous sexy nose of cassis, dark red fruit and some element of spice leads to an absolutely seamless palate. Here the tannins are well managed. This is a glorious teenager with first growth length.

• 2006 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (5/3/2025)
This was oxidized and flawed. The palate showed darker fruits and what seemed like some earthy elements but I couldn’t get past the nose.

• 2006 Château Mouton Rothschild - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (5/3/2025)
Darker fruit with an element of cassis. Long and lingering finsh. Really satisfying wine but the tannins are clipping the finish today.

• 2006 Château La Mission Haut-Brion - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan (5/3/2025)
Darker red fruit with some earthy elements. Beautifully presented. Excellent intensity of fruit. Just needs some time to flesh out that complexity on the finish. Very nice.

• 2006 Château Léoville Las Cases - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (5/3/2025)
Bright almost pure blackberry type fruit. Incredibly pure and also highly tannic. The purity here is special and the finish will be phenomenal with time. This seems like a Pauillac to me and I guessed Mouton which was wrong. (N.B. RP said in the past that LLC when young can taste like Pauillac at first so I don’t feel SO bad)

• 2006 Château Cos d’Estournel - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe (5/3/2025)
Dark fruit wrapped in earthy elegance. Here the palate is intense and long. I thought this might be the La Mission at first. Nice acidity. Would be wonderful with a meal.

FLIGHT ONE- DAY TWO

• 2006 Château Troplong Mondot - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (5/4/2025)
This one got my thumbs up… Gorgeous darker red fruit with some element of coffee spice on the nose. A little tannic but the finish here is quite nice. Delicious.

• 2006 Château Quinault L’Enclos - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (5/4/2025)
Very nice nose but middle of the pack fruit intensity here. Dark red fruit. Quite pretty but the finish just never takes off.

• 2006 Château Pavie Decesse - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (5/4/2025)
Tannic. Would be nice with a big steak. Darker fruit with great mid palate density but the finish is so tannic.

• 2006 Château Lynch-Bages - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (5/4/2025)
Cassis and darker red fruit on the nose. The palate is still tannic but oh so sublime on the finish. Medium concentrated. This one gets a thumb way up.

• 2006 Château Calon-Ségur - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe (5/4/2025)
I was a contrarian here. My favorite wine. Fabulous red fruit that showed incredible intensity and mouth-watering acidity. Beautiful finish.

• 2006 Château Saint-Pierre - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (5/4/2025)
Weakest by far in this group. Medium concentration but just no real fruit intensity on the nose or palate. Rather simple.

FLIGHT TWO-DAY TWO

• 2006 Château Léoville Barton - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (5/4/2025)
Dark fruit with element of cassis. Very precise and amazing intensity of fruit. Very pure and long on the finish. There is an elegance here and silkiness of tannin that made me guess Pichon Lalande. Wrong! A really nice Leoville Barton to me in a very tough lineup.

• 2006 Château Montrose - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe (5/4/2025)
Barnyard notes and darker fruits. Intense darker fruits on the palate and long finish but just lacks that extra gear of the best wines here.

• 2006 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (5/4/2025)
This was stunning. Earthy red fruit nose. So elegant and complex. Silky and Sexy. A first growth intensity on the finish to me. I was guessing Haut Brion but this was the Pichon Lalande.

• 2006 Château Haut-Brion - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan (5/4/2025)
I knew this was a first growth from the purity of fruit and intensity . The nose was a pure darker red fruit. Not a lot of earthy notes to me. Very focused and pure on the palate. First growth intensity and length on the finish. I guessed Latour but was wrong.

• 2006 Château Margaux - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux (5/4/2025)
Spicy. Tobacco type notes Some almost sous bois. Very elegant and integrated. Wonderful first growth intense finish.

• 2006 Château Latour Grand Vin - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (5/4/2025)
My favorite of the entire tasting. Intense red fruit on the nose and palate. Cassis. Some very elegant tannin. Incredibly long and seductive. I guessed Margaux but this was Latour. The best wine I tasted by quite a bit.

What a wonderful couple of days. On the whole, the first growth wines showed why they are rated so highly every vintage. The most complete and satisfying of the two days. Higher acid vintage but there were some really good wines made.
It was great to see Todd French, Eric Levine and others that were from out of town. A great time was had by all.
