2010 HEROLD by Mark Herold

MADE FROM LIMITED BARREL SELECTIONS OF OUR CHOICEST OAKVILLE AND COOMBSVILLE CABERNETS.

$195 per bottle

The first thing you notice about this wine is its color: an inky glass staining opaque purple/black. Next you notice are explosive aromatics of perfectly ripe exotic mountain berries and black strawberries followed by otherworldly fragrances of lychees, roasted blueberries and pit-roasted meats. Further complementing the olfactory spectrum are ethereal notes of sandalwood, graphite and chocolate. A wine that almost overwhelms the senses, it delivers a powerful yet seamless entry that yields to a rich assortment of ripe berry and stone fruits. A powerhouse of a wine with concentrated jammy flavors and perfectly balanced velvety tannins is at once exotically sexy and intense. Enjoy the 2010 HEROLD by Mark Herold over the next 20 plus years.

Dramatic, dark and penetrating immediately describe this wine. The color is a deeply saturated blue/black hue. Brooding from the glass is a landscape of layered scents: huge aromas of blackberries, black cherries, currants intermixed with espresso, crème de cassis, wet brick with nuances of dried flowers, black olives, and sage brush. A powerful mouth presence reveals extracted flavors of roasted black fruits showcased within a supple tannin framework is evidence of this wines fine sense of balance. Concentration, resolved fine-toothed tannins, and lingering rich flavors are hallmarks of this wine. Enjoy the 2010 HEROLD over the next 15 to 20 years.

Both wines are 100% Cabernet Sauvingnon and barrel-aged in 100% new French oak for 22 months before bottling. We affectionately refer to the new wines as, the “light label” and the “dark label” . . . because, after all, things are never just “black and white”.

These wines are highly limited and offered exclusively to our wine club members and mailing list invitees only. they are available on a first come, first served basis and may be ordered directly from our secured website. And if you are in the napa area come and visit us at our tasting room to savor these new releases!

Yep, got the same email. $195 seems a bit high for his first offering, but $95 seems like a good price point for the “dark label” considering that it is not really a second wine with leftovers from teh $195 bottling.

I am considering this offer, as I have always liked Mark’s Merus, but stopped buying after he left. Anyone tasted these or have thoughts?

“Hidden super star vineyard” maybe Meteor Vineyard? But what is the Oakville source?

as written, it actually implies it is from 2 or more vineyards in Combsville. they were careful to use appellation vs. vineyard.

I received the same offer and also really enjoyed Mark’s efforts at Merus. If you open the offer, however, the wine is only being offered in three packs - much like Merus. I will probably still buy in at the $95 offering as I have enjoyed his new label.

Like others, I would really like to see a TN on his new wines!
