Maple Syrup Recommendations

The kids love pancakes over the summer and I refuse to by supermarket “syrup.” Been buying Trader Joes Grade B Maple Syrup which is ok, but I used to buy some really nice Grade A light amber that I loved, but I can’t remember from what site. Any recommendations?

Are there any farmers markets in your area, where you can buy the product from the people who make it?

Honey, yes, but no maple syrup in these parts.

Try the Kirkland version at costco
But, keep it in the fridge upon opening (I’ve had some mold in the cupboard)

I actually prefer the “lower” (darker) grades because they have more flavor. But de gustibus non disputandem!

Pulled out my January-February 2009 Cook’s Illustrated, which featured a maple syrup taste test. Three were recommended, but one is mail order only. The other two were Maple Grove Farms pure maple syrup and Camp maple syrup (twice the cost of the Maple Grove Farms).

For kicks, not recommended were Kellogg’s Eggo, Aunt Jemima, Mrs. Butterworth’s, Log Cabin, and Hungry Jack.

Darn. Log Cabin has been favorite, (besides homemade), since 1956.

I also recommend trying the Kirkland brand, this is a pretty good deal IMO.

Log Cabin syrup doesn’t have a very strong connection to the maple tree.

I’m not a big maple fan (ok, I hate maple), but we got some from this place and my wife really likes it. http://www.woodscidermill.com/

I used to help my grandfather make maple syrup every winter. Amazing memories. The amazing smell of sap in a rolling boil is permanently imprinted in my mind

I always look for Grade A fancy. Much lighter than what is Grade B or what one usually finds. Often have to buy direct from a farm on Vermont. Occasionally I can find some on Amazon which is not as good as direct but still many times better than what I see in stores. But again I am picky on the Grade A fancy stuff which may be too light in color and taste for many.

Readily available even here in California: Coombs Family Farms Organic Maple Syrup (Grade B). Agree that Grade B has more flavor and more “oomph.”

Seriously - you can’t beat this for the price.

Lots of Them !

TJ grade b works for me

If everybody is saying that grade B has more flavor and depth what is the draw of grade A?

I find Grade B better for cooking (e.g., pies), and Grade A better for pancakes, etc.

People have different taste preferences?
