I’m debating whether I can bring enough wine with me for next week’s visit. What would be the best place to pick up moderate priced stuff, not necessarily aged? Something not real far from 38th/Lex would be a bonus, but not at all mandatory.
What type of wine?
My favorite store in NYC is Chambers St. Wines, you can take the 6 train down to the Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall stop and walk west on Chamber St.
Due north is Garnet - Lex & 68th.
Due north is Crush- 57th between 3rd & Lex
Due south is Astor - Lafayette & 4th
Jorge’s list is good, and they’re all easily reachable on the #6 train, which you can get at 42nd and Lex:
Garnet - Lex & 68th. –a few steps from the entrance to the 68th Street
Crush- 57th between 3rd & Lex –a couple of blocks from the 59th Street stop on Lexington
Astor - Lafayette & 4th[/quote] –midway between the Astor Place and Bleecker Street stations, only a couple of blocks from each
If you’re on 38th and Lex, you can try Park Avenue Liquor on 40th and Madison, which isn’t nearly on the level of the other stores listed (and keeps some -but not all- of their bottles at room temp) but has an interesting enough selection and is 4 blocks away.
Another plug for Park Avenue, have never had a bad bottle from them. Also Sherry-Lehmann is another option(ask for Joy).
Why is it called Park Avenue Liquor if it’s not on Park Avenue? Shouldn’t it be called Madison Avenue Liquor?
John, for sure visit Chambers St. and Crush- two very different stores yet equally awesome.
During my last visit to NYC, I spent a day of visiting other wine shops, totally fun.
There is also Ambassador Wines & Spirits on 2nd Ave & 54th, Alan there was very helpful. You can also go to City Wine on 2nd & 60th and visit with our Brent Clayton. . If you have time, make a pilgrimage to Wine Library - just go to Penn Station and take the train out to Morris, NJ - about a 3 1/2 hr round trip deal, but totally worth it, gorgeous store and you get to see Ian Dorin, so extra cool–again, if you have time. Have a great trip!!
Cheers!
Hmph! I’ve been shopping at Wine Library for about 3 years now and I never got to meet Ian Dorin. I suppose I really should ask if he’s around the next time I’m there…
How could I have neglected to mention Crush? Another great store.
Chambers Street is by FAR my fave, but it really does depend on what you’re looking for. They are not by a long shot the best place to find anything WS or what’s his name would call, “hedonistic.” They’re a fantastic place to find a bag of rocks tasting red from Touraine that will open new doors for you if that’s not your usual thing. Loire? Germany? Southern France? Grower champs? White burgs with some time on em? And I wouldn’t dream of limiting them by pretending I can sum them up with a list. Just trying to add a little color beyond saying they’re the best.
What’s that store on 7th around 28th? They were a decent stop along the red trains, I always thought.
Gonzo -
what everyone said, especially Chambers Street Wines and Crush. Garnet has the best prices and a large selection.
Many of the stores mentioned here will deliver as well (though there may be some minimum quantity for that) if you want wine rather than shopping.
Ian isn’t really worth the trip, but the store might be.
However it’s on Morris Avenue in Springfield, NJ. No where near Morris, NJ.
Another +1 for Crush and Chambers Street. The 2 best in Manhattan and up there for best in the states IMO.
if you’re into going a bit out of town, there is also Posner’s place:

Nice selection, a lot of high-end stuff (but not only), knowledgable staff. About 1/2 mi from the N White Plains train station. We had a good visit a month ago.
Thanks all. With a wife ITB, and being on vaca., traveling or spending much time in wineshops is not going to happen. We might have enough wine with us, and if not would look to buy a couple of $50-60ish bottles for middling dinners. So not looking for top-flight or well-aged gems. Though corkage is obviously not as practical in NYC. We are actually as close to “Advocate drinkers” as we are “Gilman drinkers” but would find something like Rhone. or grower bubbly anywhere.
Crush and Chambers are both great. But I just have to mention Vestry Wines as well. Location can make it tough to visit regularly, but excellent selection and, after being a little unsettled the last year, their staff is now great across the board.
+1 on all three. But really Crush (ask for Chris) or Chambers (ask for Chris or Beaver) are the ne plus ultra in NYC. Wine Library is a hike by train from the city, and then you need to get from the station to the store somehow. But, it is fantastic, and Ian is a great guy (disclaimer: he buys some of my wines so he must have great taste - oh, yeah, I might also be a tad biased).
Burgundy Wine Co?
Oh, and a bit out of the way for you but Discovery Wines on the LES (good large selection) and MCF Rare Wine in the Village (small well chosen selection) are both worth a visit.
Beaver? Really?
