La Lloreria For lunch today.

Excellent place. Inventive, but not avant g. Folks that work there are passionate and provide great service. The pickled black peppercorn (just a component) was one of the best tastes I’ve ever had.

Two people, two glasses of wine, 4 courses and dessert for 100 euros. The New Yorker in me is dying!

I’m just confused about the (only) 2 glasses of wine part…

So I have a solo weekend in Madrid in September on my way to meet my wife in Croatia. My first visit. Are any of the nicer (non-tapas) places recommended above more or less conducive to solo dining? I’m fine solo at a table, but solo at a bar is usually a little more fun.

Also, any nightlife (bar/jazz/old-person friendly club) recommendations? I’m planning to stay at the Principal in Chueca.

Thanks. This thread has made me hungry.

I might recommend sitting at the bar at Angelita. I haven’t been there for years but I was wowed by my one visit.

This. I was there last year. Sat at the bar two nights in a row. It was so fun and delicious!

Closed on weekends, though.

We had a very industrious dinner ahead of us…

Thanks all for the Angelita idea. Looks like they are open Thursday and Friday nights, so I should be able to make it work.

I assume the bar is not reserved?

There is a cocktail bar we love called Absent. It is a lovely jewelbox with a nice terrace, excellent cocktails and good music. It even opens early, so is good for a pre dinner dinner drink. Zero tourists, from what I’ve observed, and not usually crowded, though I’ve never tried to go there after dinner/late night. It is about a 10 min cab or 20 min walk from your hotel.

I’m pretty sure the bar is walkins only, but I’d call and ask. On my second night the bar manager saved a spot for me.

I am also a fan of Rafa for a nice seafood lunch. I’ve only sat at tables, but there is a very attractive bar as well.

El Lando is a big favorite for old school Spanish food, not touristy. No bar, but fine to have a solo table.

It was walk in as of two evening ago.

Had dinner at Angelita. Good food. Great list. The word is clearly out and the obvious things have been picked off, but breathe is still incredibly wide and great qprs on none obvious things.

For example, there is a 2005 Patrick Corbineau for <$100 euros. If you’re a Loire fan, that’s about as wild as it gets.

Had lunch prior at La Lloreria.

Fantastic.

The picked smoked peppercorn in the oyster dish is one of the best taste experiences I’ve ever had.

The team have worked together over the years at different places became friends and went here; the warmth comes though.

All the dishes show real soul. Very texture focused. Clearly focused on innovating. it’s a small place and all local when we were there. Need to make a reservation.

Pictura bar at the Ritz has a beautiful ascetic. Pedro and David on the shakers are friendly and serious about their craft. Perfect balance on the sherry Balmoral.

Looks like I’ll be in Madrid again next week, but this time during the weekend so Angelita is not an option :frowning:

Made a reservation at Gala for lunch. I’m hearing mixed reviews. Interested to see how it pans out!

So glad this thread is still active. Family trip this year is to Madrid (with a potential add-on to Mallorca or someplace else for a couple of days).

My short list of restaurants includes:
Angelita
Taberna Laredo
Casa Lucas
Rafa

Still figuring out accommodations: weighing hotels vs. rental units (the links above are helpful!). Keep your notes and ideas coming everyone, especially you @Mikko_Tuomi because you’re there soon!

Literally just back from Madrid (and BCN for the first part) this afternoon.

Very high recommendation for La Castela. Their seafood was exceptional, so we went twice. Clearly known by the locals for nice lunches.

Casa Lucas was very good also and we would have gone there twice too, but seating is very limited. Try to get there close to when they open.

I’ll try to post some more after some rest. We didn’t do any fine dining on this trip, but most was what I would call elevated above traditional tapas style, which my wife doesn’t enjoy due to the hectic atmosphere.
