Not sure if this is the right place to post this, apologies if not, but I know there is a strong MacDonald following here. I recently had a convo with Alex and figured I’d share the write up here. Some cool stories about his family’s history and some of his takes on wine’s place in culture.
Their 2011 just wowed a Cabernet Sauvignon tasting here in Mérida.
They seem like cool dudes. My interactions with Alex have been great.
Nice, I’ve not had their 2011. I’ve had pretty mixed experiences with that vintage - I have had some great wines, like that Dunn I mentioned, but had a Dominus last year that was disappointing and heavy on the pyrazines
Yeah, one could say that ![]()
Good they get a little press now and then. Perhaps their wines will one day be hard to get.
oh, wait…
Todd maybe if you would just arrange a BD17 offer with them they could get their name out there
Glad to see the brothers in the public eye. Have to keep these small family owned brands in the forefront in this ever changing industry. Family brands with heritage unite!
David Baum kindly supplied me with a taste: this wine is better than the accolades.

Welcome back after 2 years Lucia! Assuming you’re participating in Berserker Day, yeah?
Trying to get back into the swing of things. I would love to participate but haven’t figured it out all the way.
I can’t imagine there’s much if any left and at most a few bottle bottles in their personal library but count me among the lucky few to have had that 2008 Macdonald out of a shiner. I still remember it as one of the best wines I’ve ever had. Hopefully some of the ones in my cellar will eventually show that well
My pleasure and at first when I saw you were gonna serve it Blind I quietly gasped
but just went with it. It was amazing how well it showed above an extremely strong lineup of high-end 2015 Cabernet’s.
THE 2016 rocks…
I’m gonna open one with that “early-drink” 2022 this spring.
Maybe I’ll do a Morgan vs Flannery dinner to kick it up a notch.
Well they are young. Interesting to read them wax about the great Mondavi Reserve wines from 94-97. I enjoyed them too, but some on this board would argue that wasn’t their peak but rather their decline! Everyone has their own perspective!
The 97 in that lineup was significantly different in style from the 94 and 95. Felt like you could feel the Parker effect. Most (myself included) preferred the 94 and 95
this wine is in a very good spot
Love this quote. “They also want to learn more. Especially younger generations who are experience-based. They don’t just want a wine because a critic scored it—they want to know the people, the story, the history, and what makes a vineyard special. Education makes people appreciate things more” (emphasis mine)
my philosophy in a nutshell
