"Lucky Pig" at Solbar, Calistoga, Napa Valley

My daughter and I decided to take in “brunch” today (which we never do), and selected Solbar at the Solage Resort here in Calistoga. We ordered “Lucky Pig,” something I had heard was very good but had never ordered, despite the numerous meals I have had there. What a treat! Black sesame crepes- so thin and delicious - which we used to create messy rolls filled with slow-roasted duroc pork shoulder, pickled pineapple, cilantro/basil/mint, glass noodle salad, a sweet/spicy sauce, and more. This is an absolutely delicious lunch item for two. Folks, if you are traveling in Napa Valley and want a tasty, fun meal to share with your dining partner, go for it. $36 for two, plus $4 extra for an additional order of pancakes.

I love this dish- I order it each time I go.

What Hardy said. Can’t believe you held out for so long, Merrill!

Merrill;
Great dish!!! Glad you finally ordered it! flirtysmile

Cheers!

Merrill,

My bride and I tried this at brunch on Sunday, on your recommendation. The pig wasn’t lucky, but we certainly were! Many thanks.

Bob

Glad you enjoyed. Some other BB folks are coming by early next month and we have a lunch reservation there, and I will certainly recommend the dish again. Lucky Pig and Cab anyone?

Another big, big favorite is their corn soup - sublime. And the Maitake Pizza. We have not had a restaurant up here in Calistoga that is this good since Jan Birnbaum closed his Catahoula. Those were the days.

I have been a longtime fan of the Lucky Pig myself. For those who haven’t seen it, or for those who might enjoy a reminder, here are the Lucky Pig pictures I snapped at lunch today.

Is it bad to admit that both times I’ve had it, I’ve polished it off by myself?

Jeez that sounds good. Will have to get that next time we’re in Calistoga. I’ll make my Kosher-ish girlfriend sit there while I eat her half. Double the fun.

Golf clap for that move.

While the Lucky Pig is terrific, they (Sol Bar) do something called Fish Camp which I actually think is better (obviously very different, though).

That’s a meal-full. Although I will admit that a month ago my daughter and I put every bit of the meat away with 2 rounds of all the accompanying goods.

I don’t know this one. One of our regular local group that floats in and out of Solbar recently died, and very suddenly. His favorite was the steam buns (with pork belly, lettuce and some delicious sauce), but served on a plate, not in the basket it comes in. Last night I had the buns “Walter Style,” in honor of our deceased friend.

Probably the most stunning dish there right now is the potato gnocchi with corn, chanterelles, black truffle, and parmigiana. Everyone is raving about it. My daughter and I went two rounds with that one flirtysmile .

Indeed.
