Loss of a Great Restaurant. Lola in Dallas

Had the article below forwarded to me today. Lola closing is a loss to everyone in Dallas, not to mention all of the wine geeks that have been enjoying the list there for the past 10 years. All the best to Van and his staff.

OK, so as a detached, objective outsider, let me ask, “why?”

I understand costs are high and Van says business is down, but this kinda sounds like the equivalent of Troquet in Boston closing. Shouldn’t DFW be able to keep this place pumping?

Maybe Izzy can add some perspective that makes sense to me because I don’t see many top NYC places throwing in the towel…

That sucks. When circumstances called us to go be near Dallas, we made sure to fit Lola into the trip.

A.

Wow…

Eaten there twice…the food wasn’t overly exciting…but the list was ridiculous. Bummer.

Agreed. What gives? Van was very nice and welcoming both times I’ve been there, sad to see him go.

Yep. This freaking sucks. It’s not like the 3-4 groups I frequent didn’t do their part to keep it open. We’ll sorely miss it.

Wow! And I was told the bubble hadn’t hit Dallas.

Very sad to hear this.

I’m not sure how much work Van needs to do to make a living after his family sold the car dealerships. I surmise that the restaurant has probably gradually edged closer to just breaking even with the economy and Van has decided that working the long hours was just not worth only breaking even when he has twins on the way soon.

In other words, the prospect of spending most of his time away from his family for a minimally profitable “labor of love” just did not appeal anymore.

My condolences. I missed my one chance at going to Lola when I came down with a stomach virus the morning before my reservation during a business trip. That list was unbelievable.
