Los Angeles Wine Company -- Now Closed

Just found out.

Used to be. San Diego wine company that was pretty similar, not sure if they were related.

Wonder when they closed

They had a very good run - not sure why they closed either but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that K and L is moving in to the neighborhood a few miles away. . .

Cheers

I believe same ownership came down and opened SDWC. Then they sold it and then it was sold again to current owner (was employee) Matt Francke. Good guy and shop but my sense is they lowered the bar of higher end they used to carry. Still solid wines and some of the best pricing around though

It’s still there? Haven’t been there in probably 15 years.

Wait … what?!? Where is K&L opening up? Gosh, it would be lovely to not have to drive all the way to Hollywood from PV to go to K&L.

Culver City on Sepulveda and Culver. I was so happy when I heard this too–it should be opening within a couple months

This is amazing! … only thing I worry about is the dynamic between them and nearby Wine House. IMO, L.A. has three retailer stalwarts: K&L; Wine House; WHWC (a bit of stretch I know, but I’m including them). Interesting to see one open a location nearly next door to another. As between Wine House and K&L, and tend to use them for pretty different things, with probably my biggest overlap being Sherry. I think they have different strengths, but they’re both so good, broadly speaking … I’ll be keeping my eye on Wine House awfully closely — it would suck to see them shrivel and slowly die.

Thatcher is opening a store in Brentwood, too.

Uh oh.

These really are not good developments for my bank account …

If I’m not mistaken, same family that owned Topline in Glendale. IMHO, LAWC was going downhill in the last few years in terms of quality & stock. I would occasionally visit, but rarely bought.

phew. for a second I thought that was Los Angeles RIVER Wine Company…

Is Topline still around?

yes Larry, at least they were a few weeks ago

Bummer . . .

Any thoughts on what you consider the relative strengths of WH vs. K&L. K&L has a superior website, for sure - I don’t know of another wine retailer with as good a site as K&L.
