Looking for the Best NY Steakhouse

Not Lugers

We had been going to Ben Benson’s for Christmas Eve for many years and then it closed. We went to The Palm on the east side last year, and it was a big disappointment. I thought about Michael White’s new place, Costata, but we really want a traditional style steakhouse. Sparks was a thought, and I haven’t been there in at least 10 years, but I haven’t heard any recent reports. I’ve been disappointed with Keen’s steaks the few times I’ve been there. While Benson’s may not have had the best steak in the city, they did a terrific au poivre, and they had great sides, and had great service and a good wine list. I need a replacement.

Strip House http://www.striphouse.com/

We love Sparks
Old world atmosphere .
They have a great wine list but do not allow BYO.
Delfriscos is good too but we like Sparks better. Two different style places though,

Minetta tavern serves a solid steak, though not necessarily a steak house

Quality Meats

Strip House is not what it used to be. In fact, all the steak houses have become a bit “touristy”. I’d go with either of Sparks or Wolfgang’s.

+100

second on Wolfgangs.

Steve - I was there for lunch back in May and I loved this place. Everything was just right: atmosphere, steak, sides, and a really nice ladies room! What’s not to like?

Curious, anyone been to Macelleria?

Might also go there for Christmas Eve, or the bar at EMP

Narrowing it down to Sparks and Quality Meats.

Steve, do you usually bring a bottle to QM?

Something a bit different - Quality Italian Steakhouse. Best Steakhouse & Bar in New York City | Quality Italian

Diane,

I only at there once with non wine friends. We ordered drinks. I’m not sure about corkage.

An asssociate in my office has a steak eating club like we have wine groups and they go out once a month for a big steak dinner and a rotating group of steakhouses. He says Quality Meats is the best. I have not gotten there yet. Corkage - I just called - is 2 bottles maximu, $35 per bottle - can’t be on their wine list.

Jay, now that is a club I would like to be in [basic-smile.gif]

I just made a reservation at Quality Meats.

I think I will bring a 2008 Black Cat - it shouldn’t be on their list [cheers.gif]

I really like Sparks. It has great service, jewels on and off the list (including half bottles!) at fair prices, and great steaks.

You can be assured of that! I had a petite filet that had lots of flavor, but without a ton of fat to fight against. That wine should be a good match for what is going on there. Decant if you can.

The absolute BEST steak in NYC? Get the porterhouse for three at Keen’s. You will not find a better aged prime beef in NYC. Great sides as well.

I also like, as Paul mentioned, Quality Italian, but it is loud.

I’m not as thrilled with its sister restaurant, Quality Meats.

Honorable mention to the new Marc Forgione steakhouse in TriBeCa. Its pretty damned good. Their tomahawk steak is GREAT.
