Hi all:
I am wondering if there are any self-storage facilities in NYC that accommodate wine storage - aka no receiving, no shipping, no data entry - just like a small self-storage locker of the sort you’d find at Cubesmart or ExtraSpace, but with temperatures suitable for wine storage. Haven’t had much luck on Google. Thanks.
FYI if you are looking for this because you hope it’s cheaper, just know that the price I pay for self storage in ATL is on par with the full service pricing in NYC at MWC. It’s really a great price and I would love them to manage my cellar.
Hi Paul, I work in wine storage and I am not aware of any. Chelsea Wine Storage was the last one to offer lockers but no longer offering such and perhaps best to avoid (no libel suits, thanks).
From what I understand Mana in Jersey City has a handful of unmanaged lockers. But I have never seen such. If going out to Jersey City is an option give them a shout.
NYC real estate is so expensive (these days just about anywhere) that I don’t think the economics supports the private locker model. If it did, someone would be doing it. There’s a critical mass of collectors and plenty of people who would want an unmanaged private locker. Yet. None.
Who’s looking to go into business for themselves?
After19 years with the same storage in the Bronx, I bit the bullet and gave in to the increases in storage and various unnecessary and excessive service fees with an outfit in the Bronx (no self-storage service) and found a recent home in Mana in Jersey City that charges based on the services that I need. Since I’m a fresh client, it remains to be seen about customer satisfaction.
Good to see it posted about by Marc Hanes, though.

Appreciate the thoughts, all of you. Unmanaged storage may not be an option in the city, it seems. For me, pickup/delivery is inconvenient to arrange during the week, time windows are tough, I don’t have a doorman to sign, etc. It’s easier to just drive somewhere on a weekend day and bring/take/organize what I need at my pace. I can see how the economics might be tough however. Onward!
Marc is correct that Mana in Jersey City has some self storage lockers. I’ve spoken with someone who rents one who’s passed by when I’m picking up wine and he said he’s happy with it. I use open storage there.
I just went through this research process as well, and any self-managed lockers were significantly more expensive than managed storage.
I ended up going with MWC earlier this month, and while it’s obviously early days the process for onboarding and pickup for the initial loading was easy.
You also can drop off items at their manhattan store for loading into storage, which is what I plan on doing to not need to manage pickup schedules at my apartment.
I looked for several years roughly 15 years ago, and Chelsea was the only option.
I kept some wine for the midterm in a Manhattan Ministorage locker for many years, while keeping longer term wines at NY Wines in Queens. One Manhattan Mini location on West 44th got quite hot in the summer (every long weekend in the summer, they claimed the AC was down and couldn’t be fixed until Tuesday). Later I moved to one of their places in Inwood (213th and 10th, right by the 1 train, which was very convenient for me) and the AC kept it under 70 even in the summer.
Apart from the AC, their places are very clean and well-managed. And it was nice to have access to some of my wine 24/7.
