It’s a weird request I know, but I have picked up a cellar where many of the wines have import labels with Locker’s name on them. Almost all of them are unknown producers, I find them on the net but all of them are pretty obscure. The interesting thing is I have yet to find a dud among them. The occasional over the hill bottle, yes, but a tiny fraction compared to the gems I have drunk recently from Madiran to Cahors, even premier cru Beaujolais with some age, and some utterly brilliant Bandols. Following this man’s purchases might make an interesting article, but apart from one sommelier, nobody seems to know who this man was.
If this isn’t a joke that is going over my head, perhaps you’re looking for a Peter Q who stored those particular wines in the locker he designated ‘A’?
I missed that you said that they were import labels but the syntax still seems odd (as you note).
Sounds like it was a cool find. Aren’t these all hard to find with some age on them on this side of the pond?
Definitely the name is right. Apparently he used to eat at Daniel with similar aged friends, all pretty doddery, but they apparently knew their wines.
There is a weird article in the NY Daily News about someone who was abandoned in an apartment with that name, but the Peter Locker there seems to be too young to be the same.
Mark,
I too have picked up a bottle or two with his name on a sticker. He is indeed the guy who was left (not abandoned) on the floor of his apartment by his longtime mistress for several days. Was also involved in a serious divorce and some ugly Page 6 back and forth with the ex-wife. Was apparently a big New York collector and most of the references I found other than that sordid stuff was that he gave quite a bit of money to the symphony.
I’ve gotten a few bottles over the years with that massive white back label also. assumed it was a collector.
Here’s an interesting article!
Getting a little sordid. Thanks Mark!
Maybe she got mad and misinterpreted his request for old Cahors.
Yep, that’s it. ![]()
“An open secret in gourmet circles”. Haha
I know this question was asked a while ago but I actually knew Peter. Fascinating man. I personally inventoried one of his wine cellars back in the mid 1980s.
