London - some questions

Going for one week

  1. Do you have recommendations for cell phone rental? my cell phone cannot be unlocked. fonmigo is one name that has come up…

  2. Restaurants - looking for non-touristy restaurants. Please do not recommend Ledbury (have a reservation already), Fat Duck, St. john. Also - not Darroze or Ramsey. How is river cafe?

  3. indian food - overrated? once again looking for non-touristy restaurants and do not need nouvelle michelin starred places. How about Tayyabs, Amaya, Chutney Mary, Moti Mahal, Veeraswamy, Quilon…

  4. fish and chips? worth it???

thanks,

Scott

Scott,

Where are you staying?

  1. Can’t help you on cellphone rental.

  2. river cafe is really great. For other non-touristy stuff:

  • white horse in parsons green, grenadier in Wilton mews, dove in hammersmith and ship just over wandsworth bridge for pubs
  • petit maison, le caprice, the square, chez Bruce, le gavroche for restaurants
  1. Indian food is great but varies from nouveau eg amaya to traditional eg haandi or star of India on brompton road

Feel free to pm for more info

Resto

just S. of Soho Sq.–veeery good, both food and wine, and nice service, but not overly elaborate. I think it has a Mich star now. Note: I ate there over 3 years ago.

Indian: Brick Lane in the East End has many places. On Fieldgate St., near Brick Lane, is Tayyabs, http://www.tayyabs.co.uk . Very good. A bit noisy and crowded, but hey, that’s India! There may be other branches also.

Well, Tayyabs is Pakistani, not Indian, but you should make the trek. You can BYO at Tayyab, so stop at a neighborhood shop for lager before you arrive for you r reservation.

River Cafe is a bit of a shlep, not exactly at a Tube stop. It’s OK, very good in fact, but I would not place it on my must visit list. I’ve been to too many excellent Italian restaurants in Italy and the US, and comparatively, River Cafe seems slightly dated. It’s the Chez Panisse of London Italian.

I really like Moti Mahal for refined Indian.

Among Fish and Chips, there are two destinations:
Masters Superfish is near Waterloo Station, a 5 minute walk east on Waterloo Rd. Cheap and great.
Golder Hind is on Marylebone Lane. It’s a hole in the wall. A few minutes walk north of Oxford Street.

Maze, The Square, Tom Aikens, Tamarind…love Chez Bruce but a bit of a haul.

thanks for the comments but once again - i am looking for local, high quality neighborhood restaurants.
I live in NYC and looking for different that what i can get here.

Tayyabs is a good example.

what else?

Scott,

Which neighborhood? London is a big place.

I like St. John and had a great time there recently, but you said you didn’t want that recommendation

For Indian, we went to Amaya recently and while it was delicious (truly), it was overpriced (dramatically) and too trendy for us. If you’re looking neighborhood, I’d think Tayyabs would fit the bill.

I think The Square is terrific, despite the fact that it can feel a little bit corporate. It has fantastic food, great service, and a very nice wine list.

staying in Belgravia but anywhere the Tube can take me…

we went in April to visit our college daughter
ate at River Cafe. BYO’d 40gbp corkage brought a Soldera Riserva and the sommelier was very attentive and we shared and were gifted many tastes.

St John- BYO’d 25gbp corkage casual very good meal.

Tayyabs- great place no corkage 7 of us ate a ton of food for 80pounds.

Golden Hind- lunch fish and chips. very traditional

Saltyard tapas on Goodge Street

Go to Borough Market open Thurs-Sat only excellent grazing

what did you think of the fish and chips at Golden Hind?

classic

You can’t get Indian in NY that rises to the level in London.

There’s no point to doing the Michelin schtick for international type joints. Not the Square or whatever. But, the fact that Quilon has 1* ought not detract from it having more interesting Indian than NY. So too Moti Mahal. But forget Rasoi Vineet. Doesn’t live up to the billing.
