LIVE THIS SATURDAY! Video Chat with Marc Hochar of Chateau Musar

Thanks Todd - my 2000 Musar Rouge is decanting!
Musar_small2.jpeg

The aroma of the '99 rouge filled the room as soon as I pulled the cork. Noticeable but mild VA on first taste. VERY long finish. Standing up now and I’ll decant and bring it upstairs to warm up a bit before the tasting starts. Very promising!

I’d be interested to know how it shows. I’m trying hard to forget my last 2 bottles for another 10 years or so, but maybe I’ll be tempted before then.

Going to try and join. Thanks for organizing

30 minutes to go. Just decanted the '99 after it was standing, opened, for a couple of hours. Still at cellar temp. Second taste, immediately on decanting, and this is a perfect dictionary definition of “bottle sweetness.”

We’ve got well over 50 RSVPs ‘yes’ and another couple dozen ‘maybe/interested’ so please be sure to read the rules/schedule in the OP above! See you soon!

Drinking 2003 tonight even though I had completely forgotten about this.

This is one of the best winemaker discussions I’ve ever gotten to participate in, and I’ve been to a great many wineries around the world and met many interesting people. Marc, and the Musar story and his family’s story, it’s as interesting and distinctive as anything I’ve ever encountered in the wine world.

Thank you so much, Todd, Kevin, Jon and especially Mark for making this happen. I’m so incredibly stoked right now.

Home run!

So wonderful - thank you Marc, Kevin, Todd, Jon.

That was GREAT! Amazing questions! We definitely have some extremely knowledgable folks who joined in - the specificity of some questions was enough to even stump Marc at times!

I recorded it and I believe VinConnect will post it on their site. Thanks, Kevin and Jon for putting this together!

That was just incredible–already signed up with VinConnect. Thanks to everybody that helped put this on and the fantastic questions!!!

Son had a melt down so had to hop off. Glad it was recorded. Any discussion of recent (last 4-5 years) vintages and how they’re progressing?

I took notes from many, though not all, portions of the discussion since I quickly realized I’m not going to want to forget the things I learned today.

I’ll type up my notes here, probably tomorrow, for those who are interested.

He did say that the 2010 is a cinsault-dominant vintage, and as such, it will mature earlier and be more approachable near release than the typical vintage.

He said the 13 red and 12 white are the next ones to be released. That range of roughly 7-8 years from vintage is typical for them, though they release vintages earlier or later depending on the vintage and when they think it’s right to release it. They bottle after 3 years, so they have a lot of bottles aging in their inventory.

I joined late but the part I caught was epic; up there with the winemaker q&a séries from back in the day. More please

Thanks to everyone for setting it up. Marc did a wonderful job and it was a very interesting discussion. When you think about how hard it is to make wine consistently in normal circumstances, the things that his family has had to deal with in Lebanon are mind boggling. Through it all they produce one of the world’s most distinctive wines on an amazingly consistent basis!

Is there a link to the recording?

Curse you Todd! I’ve been trying to severely restrict my wine buying but by the time the call had ended I’d ordered a half case of pre-arrival 2005.

More seriously this was wonderfully fun and informative. Zoom conferences are helping me keep my sanity these days.

I wanted to join, I just was too exhausted and hit the bed early!!
