…by the way, Barthod owns 11 er crus not 9. She added Noirots and Sentiers who used to be blended in Chambolle village as she has small plots. Unfortunately, will need to wait many years before opening as they are quite recent additions…
These were being held over the summer, but I also added a few to a SommPicks order last week (multiple bottles costs the same to ship as a couple, so free shipping, right? )…still have some of everything.
There’s no doubt the VRs can outclass almost all other Burgs when they’re on. Auction pricing seems to confirm that. Nonetheless, Chambolles have always been my ‘go to’ commune in Burgundy. I can also attest that I’ve had better luck over the years opening up CM PCs over VR PCs.
I remember starting a thread over 10 years years asking board members to choose their preference between VR and CM and the great majority chose VR.
I was in the minority as I’ve always had a soft sport for CMs.
They may not have the nobility of many VRs but I never seem to tire of them.
They’ve also been some comments on this thread of people’s love for the ‘feminine’ scented wines of Volnay and Chambolle. I too, often gravitate to these two communes. Still at a recent tasting, I switched from a CM PC to a Volnay PC, and I was surprised how much I preferred the general tasting profile of the CM, compared to the Volnay I had switched to.
Of course there are no right or wrong answer here, just a personal preference.
Mugnier may be one of the high points of the commune, but there is a bevy of sublime producers here such as Barthod, Mugneret-Gibourg, Bertheau, Drouhin, Clavelier, Hudelot, Vogue, and Sigaut.
Looking forward to 5-10 years from now when hopefully most of my Barthods will be mature.
Are there any vintages of Barthods that you’re drinking now ?
I comment on your post about failing to catch BARTHOD’s wines at the best time. I had similar experiences. I think these are wines that demand sufficient time. Still, I understood what you were stating. As an aside : haven’t read the whole fantastic thread (I am trying now) but regarding the fact that too many CHAMBOLLE wines arguably seem to come from winemakers outside Chambolle (HUDELOT-NOELLAT, ARNOUX-LACHAUX, GRIVOT, ANNE GROS, BRUNO CLAIR and so many others) that may be partly true. But do not forget about upcoming star Dominque Le Guen at HUDELOT-BAILLET. I already mentioned it elsewhere…His winery is oppositie the small but excellent restaurant LE CHAMBOLLE…
I actually just heard about Hudelot-Baillet and recently picked up a mixed case of the 19s including the BM. Great value across the range, I hope they also come through on experience.
You can rely on HUDELOT-BAILLET wines to deliver. Looking for extremely fine premier cru ? I advice the BORNIQUES. But the CHARMEs and CRAS and even the vieilles vignes village are worth while chasing. I do not mention the BONNES MARES since I never had the chance to compare it to ROUMIER’s, MUGNIER’s, De VOGÛé’s version. Will try that soon.
Did a fun side by side last night. 2019 CM VV from Lignier and Felettig.
Lignier is so soft and supple, elegant to the max but with bright acid perfectly in balance. This was my first bottle of the '19 and both my wife and I absolutely loved it and could drink it every night. I tracked down a couple more cases in the UK late last night as there’s nothing available in the US.
Felettig has a very similar nose and palate, but it’s a little more angular and rough around the edges right now compared to the Lignier. I’ve had several of these over the past year or two and always thought it was good and it is. Lignier is just another level at this young stage. It’s like putting any solid producer up against the Sisters. It’s going to lose.
