Let's talk Chambolle

Just had a 2017 Barthod Beaux Bruns last night. It needed a bit of air to show, but was charming and approachable. So much depth of flavor and texture and everything you want in Chambolle.

02 Michel Gros CM yesterday was fantastic.

Yeah, I think of it the same way. Though I would describe older Barthod as more rustic than extracted. A lot like Truchot. The recent wines are a lot cleaner and more approachable (for the better) now that Clement is a lot more involved.

PSA: I find the Beaux Bruns to be the most accessible/early drinking of Barthod’s 1ers.

Hi my friend Johan…long time no hear from you.

Hope you are doing well, and enjoying good health and drinking lots of good burgundy wines.

I bumped into this thread this morning - as it was brought back recent.

If you have some free time, please re-visit it.

I re-read it and found out that I talked too, too much in 2021…

Dear Peter,

So glad to hear from you again. I certainly would not say you talked too much. Keep on talking ! Love to be hearing from you whenever you open up a BURGUNDY…In addition to this thread : I had a François Berthau Charmes 2014 recently and it was way too light for my palate. Moreover, it also looked rather too pale…A disappointment !. BERTHEAU is never that concentraded and always on the more delicate side. But still…

My favorite wines from Chambolle which display that delicate and lacy character are:

Dujac Gruenchers
Bertheau Amoureuses
Clavelier La Combe d’Orveau

Thanks for posting and get back to me so fast.

It is quite warm ( or hot ) for a snow bird like me in Canada. I am no opening too many burgundy lately. I will do do in a couple of weeks…

What do folks think about Groffier?

More rustic and less wow factor than the top producers. Relatively cheap Amoureuses for a reason.

I don’t find it at all rustic. Needs lots of time. Drank cases of 78 throughout 2000-2010. The BM and Chambertin also.

The oak integrated well, a bit obtrusive early on.

Not sure who called Groffier rustic (?), but it’s not, it’s just made in a style similar to de Vogue - oaky and extracted. I don’t find it integrates very well; an 02 Amoureuses a friend recently brought wasn’t fun. But I’ve not had recent wines since 2013.

That’s an interesting suggestion. I find Dujac Gruenchers to be more “Dujac” and less terroir specific than just about any of the other cuvées. Just had the 2017 last night with dinner.

:man_shrugging:I haven’t had the 17, but vintages like 99, 00, 01, 02 and 07 for my palate display Chambolle character while also being very “Dujac”. When you taste it in a lineup including the CdlR and CSD the Chambolle comes across pretty clearly.

I’ve had the opposite experience when tasting the wines Dujac lineup horizontally. YMMV

My training-wheels advice for those looking for what most consider the typical markers of Chambolle:

Buy Bertheau.

It’s succulent , red-fruited, airy, transparent, less extracted, gauzy, etc.

It’s also relatively affordable.

The 1er Cru bottling is the sweet spot at roughly $100.

My first exposure to Chambolle was the Bertheau Premier Cru (I think it was an '02 or '01), and I always associated Chambolle with their red-fruited, airy style.

I don’t drink too much red Burg anymore, but I had a '20 Meo-Camuzet Les Feusselottes a couple of months ago and it was like the polar-opposite: really dark-fruited and dense. Was that because of house style, vintage, or both?

That’s Meo’s style.

Both. 2020 is a fairly dense vintage, but it’s also Meo’s extracted style. Also, I’ve had 2001 ans 2002 Bertheau, and they’re very pretty, but I wouldn’t expect a 2020 Bertheau (let alone a 2018!) to taste like that.

Based on a sample size of one (2020 Bertheau Amoureuses a couple months ago), it’s not a vintage to pursue for the classic Bertheau profile. Dark, dark fruit and deeply concentrated. I couldn’t help but feel disappointed, not because it was a bad wine - others were quite enthusiastic about it, and it wasn’t disjointed like the 2018s - but it was the antithesis of what I’m looking for when I open a Bertheau. Been meaning to open a 1er to follow up on that impression.
