I am looking for some good producers of left bank Bordeaux wines that are under $50.00. I am looking to drink them during the week and on weekends when I am just relaxing at home. I have way too many of these that are over $100.00. Can you please give me some of your favorite ones?
2009 and 2010 Cantemerle
Just grabbed some 09 for $33
Lanessan
Not sure if you like St Estephe, but the Costco on I-394 got in a pallet of 2010 Lilian Ladouys they were selling for $23 apiece
Word.
Off the top of my head, I’d add Sociando-Mallet, du Tertre, Gloria, Carbonnieux (both rouge and blanc), and Lanessan (especially the 09).
Bordeaux pricing is amazingly variable in the USA, but these are all sub-$50 if you shop on line for current releases (and then wait 10-20 years for them to mature!).
La Louviere from Pessac Leognan (not far from Haut Bailly) is a great value - in white too.
For a more steely Médoc style that requires more aging, there is a cru bourgeois just beneath Saint Julien not far from Branaire Ducru but whose name escapes me now. Lanessan! Already mentioned in previous post…
Bernadotte is a softer Haut Médoc that can be delicious, while Pibran (Pauillac) is a hardy and sometimes particularly tannic style for a longer haul.
Bages Monpelou also Pauillac can be savory.
I also like Tronqoy Lalande - misspelled - in Saint Estephe. And Haut Marbuzet too, as well as Ormes de Pez.
I have found the 09 Lanessan extremely enjoyable in its youth. This was a 2-case purchase for me.
Cambon La Pelouse is another major winner, especially in 2010. Should be sub-$25.
Haut Bergey is quite nice, just a bit modern
Poujeaux
Gloria 2010 is about $50
Lots of good suggestions here. I like Cantemerle, Sociando and La Louviere.
I would add Meyney. I just had their 2000 and thought it was a worthy successor to the lovely wines from the 80s which are still great.
Another cool wine is Rochemorin, a Lurton wine and a bit of a poor man’s La Louviere.
My case of 1990 lasted until last year and the last bottle was the best. 2005 was very nice as well.
Haut Bages Liberal, Gloria, Clos du Marquis, Prieure Lichine, Chasse-Spleen and Belgrave all come to mind.
My top choices would be Haut Bergey, Latour Martillac and Cantemerle.
Thanks,
Ed
+1 for Meyney, Cantemerle, Gloria, and Lanessan
2009 Chateau Senejac.
Thanks for all your great suggestions.
Hi Ron,
Last week I bought 2010 Lilian Ladouys at that Costco. They have been selling numerous 2009 and 2010 Bordeaux wines for under $25.00.
2003 Lagrange is a nice wine, aged and available at couple of places. 2002 is a even better IMHO, but none out there right now.
I just had a really nice bottle of 2004 d’Armhailac, which is out there in your target range.
Others that I’ve snagged lately for under $50 that pop up from time to time are 2004 Malescot St. Exupery and 2000 Ferriere.
Hourtin Ducasse is a lovely wine for $20.
I am disappointed in you berserkers, abandoning tradition by actually making helpful recommendations on the topic the OP raised.
You should be recommending Haut Brion and Lafleur. And Barolo. And gwertz. Anything but what the OP asked for.
Disappointed too. Where are the Cali wines recommendations that usually come along with these requests for Old World suggestions?
I need to go find some La Louviere. The 1990 was my epiphany Bordeaux, and every time I have some, like the 05 recently, I always remind myself to track some down.
During this past Christmas holiday I opened up a 2010 Cantemerle and decanted it for over 3 hours and it was delicious. I am going to buy some more of it and also the 2009 vintage.
I had the 1990 Louviere as my backup bottle for a gathering last night.
Will pop one soon.
