Todays offer looks good. 93 point WE - Editors choice for 15 bucks…In for 6. There is one review on CT where he says bottles inconsistent. Hopefully that is not the case.
Unfortunately I can say, based on the first bottle of the Infinito Cab 2012, that I am stuck with feeding my other 5 bottles to friends and family at BBQ’s and marinating duties. I had it for the second taste last night and though there is a pretty good core of ripe structured Cab fruit the finish is bitter due to the saline quality. It’s kind of like a cranberry, rhubarb, pepper finish that leaves a bitter impression. I don’t think it will go away with age.
Sad part is I gave a glass each to my neighbors (married couple) and they sipped on it but at the end of the night both glasses still had most of it’s wine in it. On other occasions they both sucked down such wines as 2010 Chateau Andrea (a Last Bottle score, soft fruity wine with easy finish, cheap) and the 2013 Chateau Ste. Michelle Indian Wells Merlot, another $15 decent drinker.
Was it a bad bottle? No way, perfect cork, no off funky flavors. Bottle shock? Though I opened it right off the truck I have done so with countless cheap bottles before and the wines don’t change their basic flavor and finish. Heat damage? I don’t think so. Bottles were cool to the touch right after delivery. Corks were fine on all bottles.
I think the reason a $14 91 point Vinous Cab showed up at Last Bottle out of nowhere is that the bottle didn’t live up to expectations among any distributors who tasted it. Why did I see no record of anyone else selling it? Why were there virtually no tasting notes on it?
I look forward to see if anyone else has the same impression of it…
Can’t answer that but the wine has had a lot of turnover, both importers and vineyard sources. When it first came out, it was a good wine. But the economy of Argentina was run down the toilet by the Kirchners and it became harder to maintain the same fruit quality. Not sure who’s making it now either.
No way is the Infinito a 91 pt wine. My take is similar to Mark’s . . . it is, perhaps, a touch better than average; 86-87 points. Medium bodied, pleasant texture, some fruit. The pepper note is disconcerting. Lush? No. Unremarkable, and certainly not what I hoped for. Bought 6, will try another bottle, probably give the others away. Last Bottle is an enigma to me. I have been happy with several purchases but too many are no match for their cheerleading.
That is in reference to the finish of this wine - when you experience it you are taken back to a summer BBQ and a slightly tough New York Strip slathered in Montreal Steak Seasoning.
So finally a Last Bottle winner, and big time. 2013 Head Honcho Paso Robles Syrah (McPrice Meyers). Cracked it right off the truck and it is a big 15% alcohol wine with deep blackberry flavors and complexities of Syrah-pepper notes (very classy pepper). It’s reminiscent of Sine Qua Non with it’s perfumed balanced, structured rich flavors. A great score at $18! SO if I add the $14 I lost on the Infinito Cab it is still a decent bottle of Syrah for $32. Last Bottle is a gamble and therein lies the addiction.
I picked up a 6-pack of the I Veroni Chianti Rufina Riserva 2013 yesterday, at $20 each, as the 2011 bottles of the same wine were fantastic food wines - the '13 should be better
I bought the 2014 and am generally pleased…but it is different and cant quite figure it out as this CT review said…
I have now had three bottles of the 2014 Head High, still not completely sure what to make of this wine. It’s a complicated blend (read the back of the bottle - it’s the full kitchen sink of varietals), seems too much. There’s plenty of fruit, but something like a mineral “zing” on the nose that is a bit out of place. The wine is otherwise easy-drinking and presents decent value for mid-week drinking. 87 points is about right.
Surprised LBW got more of the 2013…that sold out long time ago. Guess the winery got MORE back from retail…lol…ouch…
any info on the Remy Massin Champagne Special Club 2010? Don’t see any notes on CT but when I see “club” I think it is usually a good Champagne . $49 worth it?
