I blew it there last time. Love bread and did the 16 bread dégustation early on. Drank some water, bread expanded, and I was done. Couldn’t eat a thing. Seriously. Friend teases me about it years later. Too bad they allow no corkage.
This behavior seems to happen in Las Vegas. I’ve read numerous accounts from others and endured something similar one night at Bartolotta’s back when it was in the Wynn. Others have had reservations cancelled without explanation after arriving for dinner. My assumption when these types of things happen is that there is one or more high rollers in the party and the casino is protecting them to avoid losing their gambling. If I’m correct, the restaurant has their hands tied. I’ve seen what a low level high roller can get in Atlantic City. After seeing that, it doesn’t seem to be such a leap to what a real high roller could get in Las Vegas.
We had a somewhat similar experience at Arzak about 10 years ago but it ruined the meal in a different way. There was a table in the front of the very small dinning room that was celebrating something and while it was a little loud, it wasn’t that big of a deal. The issue was both Juan Mari, his daughter and most of the servers spent most of the night visiting that table and not paying attention to the food, pacing or wine at any of the other tables. Our server was pretty much absent the entire meal, water and wine not refilled, food was dropped with no explanation, temperature issues with proteins, pacing was way off between dishes, we went through 3 different selections from the wine list that they didn’t have before we found something that was actually in stock. Our biggest fail from an execution standpoint for any 3 star meal we have experienced. Odd since its universally loved by all of my friends that have dined there. Must have been the most off of off nights. We didn’t complain because it was the end of a long trip and we just wanted to get back to the hotel but about half of the tables around us were all complaining and asking for comps.
Solution: patronize the locals establishments. They get a few loud mouths from the Strip but most of the diners have to drive afterwards. You see some of this behavior but not much…
After a few lousy by comparison meals at LV outposts of some of the higher end French places, I gave up on all of them a decade ago or longer. I tend to think of those restaurants as facsimiles of the originals, similar to the way I think of all of the Las Vegas theme hotels as facsimiles of the real places they attempt to copy in a Disneyland sort of way. I understand that many like those Las Vegas facsimile restaurants; I do not. My Las Vegas dining is limited to local places and hotel meat restaurants like Bazaar Meat and Craftsteak.
Looking for a suggestion for 4-6 people, late night. After 10. With the best food and wine available at that time. Not a steakhouse type place. Price no object. Could also do BYOB if it was a Japanese type place without a wine list.
Aburiya Raku is open until midnight. Among the best food you can get – at any time of day or night. Highly suggest going the omakase route. Heads up, it’s a pretty small place.
Planning something for January. Lamaii definitely on the agenda. Thanks for the recs. Any views on an old-school Italian off-strip? Was looking at Ferraro’s and Bootlegger as possibilities. We’ve been to Esther’s and enjoyed it, but looking for a little more of a classic vibe.
