[Las Vegas] Does the 20 dollar trick work anymore?

Heading to Vegas and staying at Wynn for 3 nights starting tomorrow. Has the 20 dollar trick (as a matter of fact, it could be $50 for argument sake) work for anyone recently?

I think a $20 trick or even a $50 trick in most cities will land you a trip to the Dr.

Stay safe

It still works, but YMMV > that’s travel talk for your mileage may vary. [wink.gif] You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. My percentages are good.

don’t you have 20/50 bucks to lose? or if they dont’ upgrade you they return the money usually?

Seriously…stay away from $20 tricks in Vegas.

Looks like it works as of last August and prior to that:

Thanks - was looking at the exact same page a couple of hours ago. Hoping to get feedback/comments on more recent experiences

Interested in hearing more about this.

Last time, I stayed at Palms and tried a variation of the “trick” which did not work. My variation was that I handed the DL and CC to the staff and left a $20 on the check-in counter. The person behind the counter just told me that if I wanted to upgrade, I had to put out another $xx per night. Maybe because it wasn’t obvious enough?!?!

I don’t think you do! I’m pretty sure Chris was talking about another kind of “trick”. [wow.gif]

I do this all the time. Most of the time works great, sometimes it does not work. I’ve always been handed back the ‘tip’ when things don’t work out, so zero downside (for me, so far). I vary the amt based on the day of the week, the quality of the hotel, the length of the stay. As little as a $10 for one night in an ok place to as much as $200 for a week in a really nice place. $200 is so cheap to go from a standard room to a suite for 5-7 days in a high end place, always worth it…

Still a baby berserker - learning something here everyday [rofl.gif]

This is encouraging; do you always sandwich the bill in between your DL and CC? And also any (non-monetary) tip on the way you request the upgrade?

Watch out for Adam’s Apples.

3 nights? If citywide occupancy is close to full, and it is holiday Monday, you best sport a Grant or Franklin.

Do the hotels encourage this? Hard to imagine otherwise. Security at these places is extremely tight.

I know if anyone took cash to provide breaks to customers in my old business, they’d be fired on the spot.

Cindy,
Sometimes I just put the bill on the desk with my hand on top but with most of the bill exposed while asking for the upgrade, sometimes I had between my id and cc, varies based on what I’m being asked for, etc. And yes, you have to vary the amt you offer based on all the variables (quality of hotel, length of stay, occupancy of hotel, etc). I was at the Revel hotel in Atlantic City, mid-week, for a single night a few weeks back. I used a $10 for the upgrade, probably would have worked with a dime or nickel. But the Plaza hotel during holiday season for a week in NY, you better bring a stack of hundreds…

Curious, what if you don’t like the upgrade result? too bad?
i.e. for 3-4 nights, u put a $100 bill with your id/cc…
they say Yah we’ll upgrade you to the ‘strip view’ room… which basically is just the same room with a nicer view… ahm… no thanks

too bad?

upgrade to suites sure. that’s worth it… but what if the ‘upgrade’ really isn’t an upgrade?

It’s Vegas. You’re going to give that money to the casino one way or another anyway!

Who stays in their room when they’re in Vegas anyways?

Better to grease a cabana boy at the pool…
