did a bit of research on the web for best pairing of wine with grilled lamb chops and mashed potatoes. (my dinner tonight)
Based on info collected, picked a few bottles from my cellar. Now curious which bottle will pair best … based on the following;
Last time had lamb chops with this
2011 Bodega Norton Malbec Reserva
loved it. Now want to try it with something maybe a bit heavier? just to broaden the horizon.
I know Shiraz is good with lamb chops but I don’t have any right now.
I know Châteauneuf-du-Pape would be great but I am holding out on that bottle for now.
Here are the bottles I am thinking of;
2001 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 904
2011 Bodega Norton Privada Mendoza
2010 Bodega Colomé Malbec Estate
2011 Bodegas Caro (Barons de Rothschild / Catena) Amancaya Malbec Cabernet Sauvignon (Gran Reserva)
2010 Collazzi Toscana IGT
or … found somewhat a Shiraz … 2011 Badenhorst Family Wines Secateurs Red Blend
If you have a Napa Valley Cabernet hanging around, I think it is a great pairing. Honestly, I am not into the whole pairing thing in any big way, but lamb/mashed potatoes/Cabernet is really perfect. Just enjoy (and stay away from the salad dressing, for maximum enjoyment).
Any of those reds would work well. Which one is a more perfect match depends on how you are preparing the lamb, and the details of those wines (most of which I have not had before). But you can’t go wrong.
This is the first I’m learning that people pair lamb with something other than PN. But I’m mostly with Merrill that pairing is overrated. The Rioja would be my pick of your selections, but I’m not a big Malbec guy.
I don’t know anyone who thinks that pinot has a monopoly on lamb. I’d think cabernet/Bordeaux or Northern Rhone first. Nebbiolo would also work or something Tuscan.
About time someone mentioned Bordeaux! This (to me) is a such a great match, as I feel the meat, taste, and texture goes so well with either grilled or roasted lamb.
I like PN with lamb. Most of my lamb preparations are more delicately flavored than comparable beef preparations, and so I prefer a lighter wine. That said I’m going to defer to the second part of my post, omitted above, noting that I think the “art of pairing”, so to speak, is wildly overrated, and if you want to pair Chenin Blanc with your lamb, go for it.
Is there a red wine that doesn’t pair well with lamb? Maybe CdB? I had a '96 Chambolle with grilled lamb last summer that was amazing. I’d imaging Chinon matching up well also.
