LA MACDONALD Dinner 12/15/22 - 10 VINTAGES (The most complete vertical tasting yet)

Back on the topic of old Mondavi’s, we should coordinate a bit if we are going to pull it off. Having only one bottle of something to share with 20 folks will be rough. I have an 85 and 87 Reserve. If anyone else has one of those that they want to bring, I will pack mine so that we can have at least two bottles of an older vintage in the lineup.

Bill, think everyone will be thrilled to have a small pour of any of these wines. Love your willingness and generosity to bring them.

All of us own special occasion wines and this is a once on a lifetime opportunity where 20 people, including the owners of the vineyard, will be fascinated to drink these wines. You’ll be a hero for bringing them!

I think it might be better to bring some Champagne or white Burgundy if anyone feels like it, rather than the old Mondavis, but it’s really a free-for-all in that regard, as we’re quite specific on the MacDonald directions.

FINAL ROSTER AND VINTAGES

Unfortunately Glen Gold has Covid, so he is bowing out, which moves @jeffruggels into his place. Since Jeff has 2011-onward he’s assigned 2011, and I’ve confirmed with Alex and Graeme they will be bringing 2010 and 2013, which means we have 2 bottles of each vintage, 2010 through 2019 - 10 vintages! This is extraordinary!!

Again I ask, if anyone has legit skill writing, let me know, as I am happy to reach out to some wine press to see if we can get a feature published somewhere.

On the champagne front happy to bring a 2008 billecart salmon Cuvee Elisabeth salmon for the group - will be a bit young but was showing nicely at a recent tasting

I could only find a 2009 Mondavi Reserve.

Because mine’s a magnum, I’ll likely not bring it, as we have a lot of wine already assigned and volunteered! That said, since I started the mess, those who are bringing Mondavi Reserves, post the vintage here because Graeme said he’d do some research in the RMW archives about the wines.

Anyone else bringing a Mondavi? If we don’t have a strong representation I don’t think it makes any sense.

Could also do Detert.

I’m planning on bringing a champagne instead, since it doesn’t seem like we’ll be able to coordinate more than a one-off bottle of older Mondavi.

Pulled all three of my assigned vintage out of the offsite storage, in case when I decant one it doesn’t show, then I crack another! Do the same with yours, obviously - the splash decant allows each of us to check to be sure the wines are showing well before bringing them to dinner

Might sound silly, but does anyone have any name tags lying around they can bring? I suck at names, would love some ‘help’ lol

Todd, I have standard 2" x 4" Avery label sticker (plain white). Is this OK?

Absolutely! If you want to create them with the printer and be all Christmas Crafty, you have the names!

Any updated word on whether this event will be covered by a journalist? Thought I saw a post that WS may join- if so that would be amazing…

Nope, we’re on our own!

There was discussion of James Moleworth from Wine Spectator covering the event, but per Alex he’s in the Rhone valley.
