Heading up to Los Angeles from San Diego tomorrow and would like to visit some wine shops as the selection in S.D. is very limited.
Probably only have time to hit one. Here are the ones I have been to or have heard of:
HiTime Cellars
Los Angeles Wine Co.
Wine Exchange
Amazing Grapes
Will be near Beverly Hills so should be near there or south.
Looking to buy some value priced wines $15 to $40.
3 of those are in Orange County and Winex or Hi Times would be my picks there. Not an expert on the LA wine store scene but I would go to http://www.klwines.com/, fairly close to BH and a quality store with fair pricing.
And when you head home, you should check out Bon Vin, on 5th Avenue in the Gaslamp district. They offer a nicely curated wine selection and boast a tasting bar as well.
Wine-ex is not on the way from SD to Beverly Hills. You’re going to take a bit of a detour to get there. Typically you’d just take the 5 all the way to the 10 to get from SD to BH. If you go to Winex you’ll probably go 5-55-91-405.
Hi Times is even farther off track as you go deep off the 55 to get there.
Woodland Hills is also about 15-20 miles past Beverly Hills.
The closest two are Wally’s and Wine House which are in a few mile vicinity. Kl is close in distance, but far with traffic as you’re cutting through the busiest streets of Los Angeles to get there.
Only because this is very close to BH, and I’m worried you might actually go there, I’m going to voice my opinion on this one: don’t go there. Storage conditions are crap, and this store should be avoided on that point, alone.
I’d say go to K&L; yeah, you’re going to have to fight some traffic unless you get lucky in the middle of the day, but it will be less than an hour of traffic, and it’s an incredible wine store, especially in your stated price range. The staff there are very knowledgeable, and I would highly recommend tapping into their knowledge to get some picks tailored to your own preferences/needs.
While you’re up there, have lunch at Hungry Cat. There’s also a good burger joint up there (Umami Burger, maybe(??), and also a good Thai place (can’t remember the name – sorry – hopefully Gregg G. sees this and chimes-in, as I’m fairly confident he would know the one I’m trying to recall).
If you’re going to the way westside of Beverly Hills then Roberto’s shop would be a good stop if you’re into Italian wine, and you might as well stop at Wine House, too, if you’re in that neighborhood.
Avoid Wally’s, especially given your stated price range.
Redd Collection has been around for about a year and a half, I think. One of the owners is Michael Carpenter who is a board member and all-around great guy. Their prices are excellent and they have a very cool space with a tasting bar and lounge.
