Kudos to Mr. Posner and his new shipping policy

Got the latest email from Grapes the Wine company.
Great new policy for the reuse of the wine boxes:

From the email:
“In order to save you and I money, and in order to help the environment (in addition to the recycled paper bags and woven bags that we use), we are now asking you to return those empty 12 btl boxes, by simply dropping them off at any Fedex location or anywhere you ship with Fedex. We will be crediting the box back onto your account, when we receive it. This will save you lots of $$$ and help out the envorinment. If you are shipping to a warehouse storage facility, we encourage you to ask them to send the boxes back on your behalf. All of the boxes are coded, so we know who returns them!”

Great policy Dan. I may be tempted to order something just for the environmental good.

I got the same email this morning, and had the same reaction: great idea all around. With the exception of the grammatical error , I applaud the move.

Even if you believe that reusing a few cardboard boxes is better for the environment than not reusing them, you can’t possibly believe that shipping wine to yourself and reusing the box is better for the environment than not shipping anything in the first place.

What’s the avg. cost to ship an empty shipper?

Hard to believe this makes economical or environmental sense.

The new 12 btls shippers we are using are $9 cost per. I would rather reuse these over and over again, then see them get dumped as trash. They are a styrofoam synthetic that is much easier to reuse than styrofoam.

I hope people take advantage of this.

Shipping emtpy shippers back via Fedex ground costs just a few dollars anywhere from DC to Maine back to NY…so for us, it makes business sense.

For those that question the “carbon footprint,” I have not done enough analysis on the matter, but a full 53 foot trailer will leave from LA arrive in NY anyways, why not make sure it is very full?

Do you mind posting or PM’ing me your supplier? I currently get pulp shippers from EBeaver, which are good but don’t have a high reuse rate. We get styro from them too but the origin is still from the big stryo manufacturer in IN whose name I currently forget.

I think I pay about $10-12 per box.

I receive hundreds of shipments at my facility each winter and I wish there were a place to send the shippers after they are unpacked. If you (or anyone else) would like to discuss the possibility of receiving ANY styro shipper that is in good condition (not necessarily purchased from your store) let me know as it would be great to have someone reuse them.

I wonder if carriers would grant an even more significant discount on ‘returned packaging’, with slower service, no insurance, reduced handling care, etc, just to bring it down to perhaps $2 per, and make a concerted ‘green effort’ as a result.

I have been using re-cycled boxes with Dan for the past year or so. It is a great concept and I hope more retailers follow suit.
