I double approve of Dan’s policy. I used to throw away Styrofoam (actually, that is a Dow Chemical trade name - it is technically known as polystyrene) until I got fed up with the wastefulness of it. So I amassed a huge amount of it in my basement until I could figure out what to do with it. Lo and behold, I found the following site:
You can input your zip and find recycling centers near you. Philadelphia only recycles #1 and #2 plastics. So this was a revelation. I found a site in Collingswood New Jersey (around the corner from Moore Brothers wine store, actually) that recycles virtually every other kind of synthetic (including polystyrene).
I hate the pulp. They are useless in FLA. I recently got 2 deliveries on the same day with one in pulp and one in styro. Both came 3 day ground from up north. It was a relatively warm day for this time of year, 80 degrees for a short window. The wine in styro was cool like it had just come out of a cellar. The wine in pulp was noticeably warmer, even a few degrees warmer than my house was at the time.
The wine in pulp was a cheapie from WTSO, so I was willing to risk that. But I will never knowingly order an expensive wine from a place that ships in pulp.
FWIW - I love the material Dan uses. It has the benefits of styro but much more durability.
Does one get a discount or refund for the box? On my invoice, I am charged for the shipper it seems ($8 for a box of 6). Why go through the trouble of taking back to Fed Ex?
I am not knocking policies, but it seems if a buyer is willing to the time to return it, he/she should possibly get credit for returning it? Or maybe you do offer it and I am just not aware. I just placed my first order with you guys a week ago.
Fu*ck rational use of resources, I barely have any free time, working my ass off during the week…so if I am going to run to the Fed ex office to drop off the shipper, then at least I should get credit on my next order from Mr. Posner. and since you mentioned that we do get credit, then I am more than happy to do my share to save the environment
You do get a credit on the shipper, at least the case shippers. I don’t know that Dan does the return things for smaller boxes.
Second, you don’t have to run them to Fed Ex or Kinkos. You can hold them until your next fed ex ground delivery and given them to the driver to take with him. Dan provides the labels to put on them, so it is no work to you at all.
I have an even better solution, both in terms of Alan’s time concerns and the environmental issues.
Alan can just have the orders delivered to my place, which is about 3 hours north of you, thus saving the addition CO2 emmisions caused by transporting the wine the extra distance to you. I will then unpack the box and drink the wine, saving Alan the time he would otherwise spend doing that. Then I will return the box to FedEx, again saving Alan the time, and Dan will credit the $ for the shipper back to Alan’s account, answering the his concern expressed in his original post. Seems like a win - win solution.
I love Daniel’s policy…I always recycle my shippers…If they are from Grapes; I FEDEX them back. If from other “dealers”, I recycle them to my local wine store.
