I had a conversation yesterday with someone who tasted the wines a few days after me, a true expert and has even a much better overview than me regarding the standing of german wines right now. AND he also shared my view regarding the Chardonnay „Reserve du Fils“ and Sylvaner „vom Austernfels“.

I am very excited for the potential of Chardonnay in Germany. Similar to my recent Spatburgunderstudy dinner, I will be doing the same for Chardonnay. Most likely in the fall because it will take a while to get a good sample size.

Be sure and get a bottle of Renard!

I will! We are now working with him.

All other German Chardonnay recommendations welcome.

The Durst Chardonnay from the Pfalz was the first German one to really blow my mind.

I also want to highlight what a remarkable sensitivity and ambitions Felix Keller has regarding Chardonnay and sparkling wines. Impressive

Will be promising to taste and watch in the years ahead.

In Germany next week and asked to taste at Donhoff, they told me I could sample the 22s they are bottling but my schedule doesn’t line up. Totally bummed. Keller was not available for a tasting.

I was fortunate enough to taste the Keller Sylvaner „vom Austernfels“ in the vinyard in December. It is a staggeringly good wine. Best in class by a mile. This wine is not available and never really will be, However it is worth mentioning because IMO it is a benchmark for a grape that many doubt or do not or did not believe in (myself included). If a Sylvaner this good is possible others should continue their efforts.

Great minds think alike.

Keep in mind.

Haha, we’ve been talking to the same person. If results go the right way, our friend and I will have to open some wine for the Tuchel derby.
