Kellen Lignier: L et A Lignier

I had a chance to meet and share some wine and food plus a tasting with Kellen last week. She is such an endearing lady. Very strong in many ways.

We had a delicious 1999 MSD Le Chaffots made by Romain before he passed away. What a fantastic wine! Perfect balance and out of magnum still quite young but starting to drink extremely well.

We tasted through the 2008 vintage from Kellen. A VERY difficult vintage due to oideum mildew. Many of the yields were down at least 10% and some who were biodynamic were down almost 40%!

The star of the vintage for here and an absolutely stunning wine is the Clos de la Roche. My goodness. Here is a tasting note on the mixture of 3 barrels. N.B. Kellen says that she selects here barrels for characteristics of each. When we tasted them separatedly they were all different. It was amazing that there was so much difference. I liked the blend the best.

Purity! A crystalline ruby color. The nose is intoxicating. Red fruit and an intense spice. So open due to the fact the malos were finished and several months had elapsed. (N.B. Kellen preserves the CO2 from malo for a few months to protect the wines so she racks infrequently.) A palate that expands in your mouth. So much energy and freshness here. Intense cherry fruit with plenty of supporting structure. This will be one of the stars of the vintage I think. Profound. FANTASTIC.

Thanks for the taste Kellen and good luck!

Great note, thanks Don.

Don, I’m curious. Does the subject of Politics ever come up when you are visiting Burgundy? I ask because it does ALL THE TIME in Italy and I imagine some of the French wine heroes of this board are to the left of Ralph Nader, no?

Ah.
No politics.
I do have some pics.
I will see if I can get them in a form to post.

Now.
Tell me who this is in the center of this photo?
