Just tried Caymus 40th.....

We just returned from a great meal at one of our favorite spots, a nice Italian restaurant on the beach which specializes in really fresh seafood. The platinum blonde at the next table, clearly on a first date, announced with great fanfare so all sitting nearby could hear, that she was a REAL wine snob (who would NEVER drink white), and then proceeded to order the Caymus 40. My wife, upon returning from the restroom, looked at me and wondered why I had that look on my face. “Something really funny just happened I can tell.”
It was awesome.
I wonder how the wine worked with fresh pasta and whole fish with lemon?
Here’s your sign.

Now that’s funny!

Well, that is the definition of snob. Closed minded and image conscious.

From a B-21 mailing:

“Wagner attributes the style of the Special Selection to his practice of additional “hang time” for a specific plot of Cabernet vines which produce the best barrels of wine in his cellars. These crème de la crème berries move slowly, steadily through fermentation, yielding one of the most mouth coating and palate pleasing Cabs in the world.”

Those grapes sound kind of haughty to me. “Don’t rush me! I’m fermenting!”

John, you are such a snob!

Mais au contraire! Pretentious? Moi? I just don’t like stuck-up grapes.

No, these are overly-fermented, drunk grapes!

Caymus tasting on Thursday last week. All the Wagner family wines.

I have been a Caymus fan from the early nineties, and I had a tough time believing that the 40th was as bad as everyone here is reporting, but after trying it, not to my taste either. The SS was much better, but still nowhere as great as earlier SS’s. What a shame.

(I didn’t take notes, and I tossed my order form, I might be off on some of the vintages, but the cabs and merlots are correct)

2012 Conundrum white - a pleasant sweetish fruity wine.
2012 Connundrum red - cheap tasting sweet red, blech
2012 Emmolo Sauv Blanc - yech, YECH
2011 Emmolo Merlot - really good balanced wine, best of the evening
2012 Emmolo Merlot - sweet, & hot alcohol
2013 Mer Soleil Chard Silver- decent cheap tasting plonk
2012 Mer Soleil Chard Reserve - decent cheap sweeter tasting plonk
2012 Belle Glos Dairyman & Las Alturas - I think these were identical grape drinks
2012 Caymus Cab Sauv 40th - I first thought of Manischevitz, seriously
2012 Caymus Cab Sauv SS - same flavor profile as above, still sweet, but wih much more tannin, and a long finish. This is much better, than the basic Cab, but still too ripe for my tastes.

The retailer told me that due to a much reduced allocation of SS, they had to bundle one bottle SS for each 11 other Wagner wines purchased. I told him that I would pass, but if he had any left over I would like to buy a small number (maybe they’ll age or, I figure that I can always resell them when they get their Parker 99-100s)

I was in the store again on Saturday, and he asked me how many I wanted. I guess I wasn’t the only one passing.

I won’t say anything but…

This is the second time I see Caymus 40 going on KL for unexplained high prices, while there is still inventory in multiple stores, and among numerous retails. I also have fading memory of seeing sales of Caymus 40 for 70-80 plus on winebid. I can’t explain it but it just feels somewhat awkward, or at least- unclear.

(PS- just realized someone posted on this thread the link to the older auction K&L Wine Merchants - Sign In or Create An Account )

Right now the case is at $62.50/bottle which is still under WS low… but it has >30 bids and 4 days left.

Where’s B.T. Barnum when you need him ?

I think people are buying it to put in empty SQN bottles.

I just watched a lady buy the 3 liter bottle t Total.

Ask Parker… Been there, done that.

It’s at $72.92/bottle now. WS low is $70. But still 15 hours to bid. Step right up!

As painful as it was to read so much negativity and mob mentality posting, I slogged through this whole thread.

I now am sure that Caymus is equivalent to Rolex - the “afficiondo” will knock it because of it’s mass market appeal and all the Proles who worship it.

My family enjoyed the 40th. To me, it was okay. I’d rather save $10 and buy Chappellet, but there are 6 bottles of 40th in my cellar because I want to see how it ages over a decade. Got 6 bottles of their Special Selection too - so flame away.

There’s also anywhere from 3 to 9 bottles of other 2012 Cabs down there, including JEC Rutherford Reserve, Textbook, Jamieson Ranch Double Lariot, Sebastiani Alexander Valley, Chappellet Signature (and waiting on their Pritchard Hill), H3, Hidden Ridge 55% Slope, Shafer One Point Five, Hill Family Estate Double Barrel (and waiting on their Napa Cab and Atlas Peak), Goldschmidt Crazy Creek and Charming Creek, and Mark Ryan Dead Horse.

I’ll drink & rack cabs from any price range - from Columbia Crest up to Lokoya Mt. Veeder and Shafer HSS. Some boutique wineries are great too. Was sorry to see Match depart because their 2007 Butterdragon Hill reminded me so much of Hourglass (another pet brand of mine), and can’t wait to get a mouthful of Congruence. Can’t forget Arrowood… and this is just Cabs.

My tastes are all over the map. So trash me for having & enjoying Caymus. I’ll remember to think about these comments this weekend while drinking '01 Special Selection with friends. [cheers.gif]

If you have the chance, search out a popular wristwatch forum and read the threads about Rolex. Haters gonna hate, no matter what the hobby. pileon

Where’s Rodney King when you need him?

I can’t speak for everyone and every comment in this thread, but as far as myself, I have no negative feelings whatsoever towards you or anyone else who buys and drinks Caymus 40th. I strongly disliked the wine myself, probably as much as any pricey wine I’ve ever had before, but I’m totally fine with someone else having different tastes than I have. I don’t consider myself a “hater,” just someone who tried a wine and has an opinion of it.

I own a Rolex. I would never buy a watch worth more than probably a few hundred dollars, Rolex or otherwise, but I inherited it from my wife’s grandfather, and it’s a good watch with some sentimental value to me. I haven’t the slightest concern what “watch geeks” may think of it, whoever they are, but they’re certainly welcome to their opinions.

I own a Rolex, 4 Seikos, all vintage, a Skagen and a few other cheapies. None more than $125.
The Rolex keeps the WORST time of all, even after my $650 service. 5 minutes fast a month.
It’s on my wrist since 1988 and I ain’t changing now.
Caymus? Sure, have at it…
