Juge Goin Up, on a Tuesday [2014 Marcel Juge, Cornas]

Alfert in da cut, and he choosey…

I’ve said it time and time again, 2014 Northern Rhone is :fire:. So funny that 2015 was all the rage. It’s actually, all the ripeness. If you want screaming aromatics and fresh acids, 2014 is dope.

This is probably my fifth or sixth bottle of 2014 Juge. It is a truly spectacular vintage of Juge. In the great run that Juge has had from 2009 - yes, recent stuff - would only give the nod to 2010, which is a more structured and for lack of a better word that may be inapposite to the Juge lexicon, “backward” vintage. High-toned aromatics of spicy red fruit puree, fresh cut hay, olives and a subtle minty top note. The palate is electric, lithe as the translucent color projects, but the flavor intensity packs a wallop. Blood orange rind, sweet tarts, savory brined elements, dry earth and black olive tapenade paste. Truly lip-smackingly good - actually, great - so soil to glass transfer. Like nothing in between to mess it up.

This is a perfect wine for my palate.

I think I had seen an earlier comment of yours about 2014 northern Rhone which caused me to pull the trigger on some 2014 Clape Cornas. Bringing them to a Syrah blind tasting this weekend and can’t wait!

Have not had the Clape, but Juge, Gonon, Allemand, Levet and Jamet are all excellent.

I’m opening a 2014 Guillaume Gilles Cornas this weekend. Hoping it shows well!

Agree most ‘14s are bangin’. Seemingly wide open.

YK,

I’ve had this exact bottle twice over the past year and it is spectacular. One of my fav Giles vintages. Give it about an hour of air and then just enjoy!

re/2014 rhone in general, I agree its an underrated vintage.

2014 Allemands are fantastic- I’m a huge fan of both Chaillot and Reynard
Gonon was solid, but outshined by 2012 and 2013.
Voge and Clape have both been solid, maybe not breathtaking, but balanced and should age very well.
Only Jamet was something of a flop for me. Truly green and dilute relatively speaking.
Haven’t drank Juge yet but I’m on the lookout based on this wonderful note

Have to agree. A perfectly fine CR but nothing profound.

We had a great bottle of 2014 Juge (if you search notes from others) a few weeks ago at Noreetuh, outshining even 2011. Has never not delivered - probably 5 or 6 times for me also since release.

A 2009-2010 revisit is probably overdue.

Mirrors my experiences with young Jamet. But 20+ years in, they turn Cinderella.

Saved a quarter of the bottle for tonight, just truly gorgeous stuff. Picked up a little bit more weight and meat on the second evening. Now on to some 15 year Irish Whisky. Seemed like a nice finish on a school night.
