hard to make a top 101 list in LA and not include urasawa…
Hmmm, I just clicked on one of the hundreds of retweets of the link on twitter.
I immediately noticed that.
Lot of mediocrity at the top. Confirms both my sense that Gold is not as good as he once was (during the LA Weekly days) and that fine dining in LA is terrible for a metro area of its size.
I think his real strength is recognizing all the off the beaten path ethnic joints that someone from Michelin or Gourmet wouldn’t even visit. Some amazing stuff in there in that sense and they DESERVE the recognition.
1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000% true. LA is just too “casual”. I’d love some more special occasion restaurants.
Roberto,
I have no problem with Gold’s love of ethnic foods. Today I ate lengua, buche, and cabeza tacos for lunch and will have dinner at Chada Thai in Las Vegas. Loving ethnic food and bemoaning the lack of fine dining in a 10MM person metro area are not mutually exclusive. NYC does a pretty good job of having both. As does London, which had crummy fine dining until recently.
Fu - You need to come to Chicago more often.
As long as you bring Dujac…
