Trip to Montaclcino, Montepulciano, Umbria and then Barolo/Barbaresco coming up in May. A variety of visits booked. Can I expect many/any of the wineries to have any 10+ year old bottles to sell? I’ve only been collecting for a few years and have had way too many “wow this would be great in 5 or 10 years” experiences. I would love to bring back some older bottles where the provenance is as solid as can be. (And yes, getting them back is of course now a whole other story…
For most wineries I don’t think so (unfortunately), perhaps you can find some restaurants with good and aged wines on their lists though!?
Otherwise perhaps some windstorms who also might help you with the shipping. Tariffs, well that’s another story and you might want to consider the restaurant option instead!
Unlikely. Maybe at a place like Antinori or a place that has vertical experiences on offer. I think Castiglion del Bosco offered older vintages for sale when I went in '21.
I’m not sure whether you are planning to visit Montenidoli, but when we visited this winter they had several back vintages of a few wines available, some going back 25+ years. I do agree that it’s less common but I would still ask.
I can really only speak to Piedmont of the regions you mentioned. Most of the wineries I have visited there do not sell back vintage bottles, but there are plenty of local wine shops that have deep cellars for sale. Vinoland in Monforte d’Alba was a great spot, I also understand they ship directly to the US but I haven’t shipped with them before.
Col d’ Orca in Montalcino has an extensive library available and we tasted many older vintages during our visit. Many are available for sale in the tasting room.
Thanks for the replies - some good info. Vinoland looks interesting we need an enoteca for in between a late afternoon tasting and a dinner one of the nights
I’m sure this is true in most cases, but my wife had a different experience on a trip there in the fall of 2019. Granted she wasn’t visiting famous producers but she came back with wines from 3-4 different wineries going back 10-15 years. I’m sure it’s not easy but it can be done.
