Hello everyone. I’m still at the beginning stages of learning to taste professionally and a thought occurred to me. Should I be tasting wine in a ISO Standard wine glass and leave my Riedel and Spiegelau glasses for pleasure reasons only? I ask this because I’m thinking the sensory range from the ISO wine glass will be something I need to be accustomed to. Or should the other wine glasses I use be sufficient as they can enhance elements I need to be familiar with. Advice on this would be greatly appreciated so thanks in advance.
Hey Jonathan, welcome to the board (although I have not posted here much either).
I see you are from NYC. On Long Island is a store called Kedco and the sell everything wine related except for wine itself. They sell the ISO tasting glasses (I have a few sets of them) and I use them all the time. I bring them to off-lines, my tasting club meetups, in my home, etc. Since I use them so often to taste I often use them in conjunction with some nicer stems while drinking in my house. I use the tasting glass for a point of reference/consistency and then I drink from the larger stem.
I normally take tasting notes and judge wines intensely when consumed through my tasting glasses versus my nicer stems. An additional advantage to using tasting glasses are they are MUCH cheaper, they are top rack dishwasher safe, when I buy six at a time I get a cardboard box with dividers in them (handy for travel/transport), and when they do break they are easily replaced.
Hope my view helps yah, welcome again and if you ever want to head over to kedco and want some company lemme know.
Thanks a whole lot! You just cleared the whole thing up for me. Kedco huh? Ill check it out. I got worried that there was no one to answer lol thx again.
