ISO: Shops with aged wine (Boston, Burlington VT, Albany/Syracuse)

We’re be doing a family road trip with our three young kids that will take us through Burlington VT, Boston, and then back through NY state, Albany/Syracuse. Not so much time or appreciation for dining while we’re out.

Getting wine with proper age on it is difficult in Canada, I’d love to bring some bottle back with me. Any recommendations for places that get good older stuff? Like K&L does in California or Chambers St. does in NY. Ideally focused on the stuff that is mature now, preference of my palate is toward 25+ years, generally old world leaning but love older California wines with age (Calera, Williams Selyeam, Dunn, Ridge, Littorai).

TIA!

Perhaps meet with a Berserker?

thats like cold spring…im guessing much further south than the op had in mind.

i forgot if dedalus in burlington had anything with age but i thought that was the most impressive wine shop in that area. note their prices werent compelling.

Gordons Fine Wine is just outside Boston. Skip Vermont, there are a couple decent shops but I havent seen any selection of aged wine.

You could also order something online and have it overnighted to your hotel.

Gordon’s is good, indeed, but in my experience it has more back vintage stuff than properly old/mature stuff. But I haven’t been buying there long enough to really know.

Empire wine is in Albany, there’s also Saratoga wine exchange near Saratoga springs, city fine wine in buffalo, cellar d’or in Ithaca, and table and vine in Springfield?

Oh forgot about City Wine Merchant in Buffalo - GREAT spot for aged Cali cab, probably better than all the others.

Sorriso Market in Brookline Village (just outside of Boston) has a ton of back vintage and older wines that are hard to get hands on.

It has been a very long time since I’ve been to Table & Vine in western Mass, but I’ve bought older Banyuls and Hermitage off the racks there at fair prices. At least when I used to patronize the store was cool enough to merit wearing a sweater when visiting, so one can have some confidence in ‘off the run’ vintages that might still be available. I’m glad to hear it sounds like they are still in business as it was a special/destination type of place, for me.

They are indeed still in business, in West Springfield now rather than Northampton. Still my go-to shop.

Joe has gems in that downstairs cellar, I’m sure. He’s pulled some interesting whisky for me in the past.

Joe where?

Isn’t he the guy at Federal? Do I have the wrong name?

Could be I don’t know never been there but might go, wanting to make sure I have him linked to the right store.

Thanks!

Agree. We were in Boston in 2021 and found some good stuff at Federal. The more expensive bottles are in the basement, down the steep stairs.

Stop making me second-guess myself! :joy: You’ll know Joe when you see him. He and the staff are good about digging up stuff in the downstairs cellar, whether whisky or wine. It’s one place I don’t mind going to without much of a plan in mind about what I want to buy.

Thanks!

I agree. There’s a little older wine, but it’s not something they tend to specialize in, and a lot of it is stored at room temperature. It’s a truly great store, though (the Waltham location). Impressive, even.

Federal’s basement is probably your best bet.
