here’s my picks to get you frisky and on the bus to Galway: Kilbeggan and soda with a dash of Regan’s orange bitters (after work); Jameson Gold (breakfast); Tyrconnell Madeira Finish (after dinner/cigars); Bushmills 16 yo (reading) and (Redbreast Pure pot still (anytime). A chaser of Sierra Nevada Porter for all of the straight whiskies, and a toast to Queen Maeve of the Generous thighs (read your ‘Táin Bó Cuailnge’)
Dang, I actually OWN a bottle of Regan’s Orange Bitters, and it is OPEN in the kitchen. Kilbeggan is a whiskey? What I bought was Jameson’s, because I like their over the top ad’s. Not a good sign for quality of the product but they amused me.
Very Gaelic sounding – are you sure it’s not “O’Willenberg”???
Susan is having a tasting of irish whiskeys at her store this afternoon. The lineup to sample includes Paddy’s, Jameson 1780, Michael Collins, Knappogue Castle Single Malt, Slane Castle, Black Bushmill, Bushmill’s 10yr Single Malt, Redbreast, Slieve Foy Single Malt and a new Bushmills Honey Liqueur.
As you are in the UK, check out these, neither of which is available in the US:
Green Spot, made for Mitchell & Sons in Dublin by Midleton
Powers John’s Lane Release
Both are pure Irish pot still (as is Redbreast, which I find to be quite variable depending on the quality of the sherry casks in the assemblage), which has a mashbill of malted and unmalted barley. Among the greatest whiskeys made anywhere in the world. One or both of the above should change your opinion about car bombs…
Edit: The new make Green Spot (stumpy bottle with cork stopper and green ‘spot’ on the label and top of the stopper) is over-sherried and under-potstill-brittle. Avoid. Buy the old stock that has a screw-top. As with Longrow 18, you will thank me later.
Drank half a bottle of Redbreast 12 with a buddy watching Mad Men 3 years ago (as we were out of bourbon and rye) and it was killer! Really like it and will drink it again.
