Innsbruck and Vienna Restaurants

My wife and I will be in Innsbruck and Vienna in a couple weeks. 3 nights in Innsbruck and 4 nights in Vienna. There was an old post on Vienna that was sparse. We are not big into the coursed out dining experience with pairings, we like casual with well executed food. Not big into food that has to be composed with tweezers or a foam cannister (I eat Marco’s pizza once a week for reference). Any feedback would be great.

I guess sparse/old is in the eye if the beholder, over a dozen places mentioned (up to August 23).

I would spend some time in grinzing when you get to Vienna; there are very nice heurigen that were fun to eat at. I would still probably check out demel’s, cafe central, and hotel restaurant sacher.

This is exactly the post referenced that I already combed through.

Better to just ask in that thread vs. having a new thread each time someone goes.

(Sorry if that comes across as grouchy, sounds like a great trip).

For Innsbruck:

Das Schindler as my first choice, Die Wilderin 2nd. (possible hipster alert including natty wines, though).

Das Schindler and Goldener Adler have serious wine programs (but I haven’t found the Goldener Adler so good for food post-covid).

Also good for food and perhaps a bit more casual Weisses Rössl.

Very good pizza (and limited pasta) in nice atmosphere: Una Pizza

We’ll also be in Vienna in a few weeks. We’re doing Meissl & Schadn for schnitzel and Heuriger Zahel in Maurer. We had planned on Steirereck, but the family wanted traditional Austrian.
Then we go to Salzburg.

We had a fantastic meal at MAST Weinbar in Vienna last month. And of course if you are looking for casual, nothing is more casual (or more excellent!) than Bitzinger Würstelstand- a Käsekrainer and a Bosna, washed down with a beer- it’s pretty hard to top.

Lugeck is very casual (and busy- make a reservation) and a solid choice for schnitzel.

Any particular suggestions for Salzburg? Will be there for a few days end of September / early October.

In addition to GG we did the beer garden at Augustiner, and Bärenwirt (traditional). We wanted local food; both were good.
In Vienna we did Meissl & Schadn for schnitzel, Bitzinger, and the Zahel Heuriger, which was wonderful.

We suddenly have plans to be in Vienna for a few days in September on our way to Croatia. Perusing this and earlier threads, it looks like MAST is a must visit. I also grabbed a table at Labstelle, which looks interesting. Otherwise I think we’ll peruse the schnitzel and wurst options and bounce around.

We’re going to the Wiener Mozart Orchester at the Wiener Musikverein one night. But I frankly don’t know much about the city. Any favorites among the museums, palaces, etc.? Looking forward to exploring a new city.

Edit: Just added lunch at Steirereck.

The Belvidere is a hidden gem museum.

We had supper at Steirereck back in May. It was amazing. We also really enjoyed a couple of meals at Zum Leben Agostin in the 5th District. Very traditional Austrian food, very well prepared. I’d recommend stopping in to get a reservation if you decide to go there as it tends to get pretty full.

I would also try to get out to grinzing and check out some heurigen, pretty unique experience. Vienna has the most vineyards of any major city.

Closing the loop: We did Glass Garden for lunch, the full menu, and it was lovely. Light enough for us to not feel bloated afterwards :). The sweetbreads course was exceptional. Honigvogel Smaragd was pricey (they were out of “M”) but a great wine and great match with the food.

In Salzburg, I would also highly recommend Koechelverzeichnis (https://www.daskoechelverzeichnis.at/). Creative food for a “simple” winebar, and I got to try a local Sekt that had spent 14 years on the lees (2011 vintage disgorged 2025).

Just got back from Vienna.

For fine dining, Steiereck is the apex. It was the best 3 star michelin meal I had on my recent trip and that included Troisgros in France.

For more low key, Meierei in Stadpark behind Steirereck is fabulous. Gasthaus Poschl is awesome. Very small place. Traditional food

Other higher end food the best was Glasswing at our hotel the Amauris.

A fantastic town. Many more great restaurants here too.
