Il Capriccio, Waltham MA

This is an outstanding restaurant with an even better wine list. I was first introduced to it by the late, great Ron Kramer. It has changed location since then, but the quality remains impeccable.

I’ll write up the wine separately, but I had a superb 12 year old Barolo off the list, paid double digits! The wines btg were well chosen and of high quality, although they were not screaming bargains.

Eileen started with a half-order of pappardelle with short ribs. I tasted and was impressed, the ribs melting, the ragu sauce flavorful but barely noticeable with the grana padano adding some brightness.

I started with a rosemary skewer of chicken livers. Served with caramelized onions, this is a truly great dish, for me hands down the evening’s best grub.

My main was a half order of potato gnocchi bolognese. Toothsome, solid but not heavy, could have used some bolder flavors but still really good.

Prosciutto salad was Eileen’s main, stunningly good, with a light dressing of mostly balsamic and prosciutto of a quality you simply can’t find.

This is a really fine restaurant, enhanced for wine people by a stunning good, fairly priced bottle list. I made my wine choice before we went, but consulted with the sommelier. I apologize, I did not get her name but we discussed the list in some detail and she correctly steered me away from an alternative that might have been too funky for the food.
