If you can only have one region for red wine?

Hm …
even with the most consistent producers there are disapointments now and then …
(DRC …)

Italy is not a region but a UNIVERSE with as much diversity as most of the rest of the world combined.

Burgundy is a tiny section of France but it’s compared to all of Italy? And Spain And Australia? Seriously?

Sorry, useless poll as you’re comparing raisins and watermelons.

Agree there.

Burg is my single largest position in my cellar, but if I get to pick ‘all’ of California that is what I’d take. I figure I’d get pinot, cab, syrah, grenache, etc.

Sure. Such is life. My keyword was “rarely” not “never”.

Thinking about it, most of my disapointments are from aged burgs I buy at resturants and auctions. Too many uncontrollable variables.

I voted for California because even though it is only about 2% of my cellar, nearly every type of grape that I love is available there, albeit, sometimes at a price that is more that I would prefer to pay, but, recently, the tarriff is not too high!

Cali for me, & mainly Syrah, but Rhone is close.

Sentimental choice would be St. Emilion & a few Pomerals, but geez, these are mostly special occasion wines for me now - was I really buying Ch. Angelus for $30 a little over a dozen years ago???

Bords so far garner 8% of the vote. A few years ago on eBob they would have won hands down.

How times and tastes change.

Burgundy is a wine-glass compared to the “swimmingpool” of Italy.

But I´d rather have a taste from a glass of fine wine … than a sip from a swimmingpool … neener

(sorry - very personal preference … no offense intended, I just couldn´t resist)

It’s a bit of a skewed poll as Burgundy and Bordeaux only make one kind of red wine each, whereas all the other regions (countries) are much more diverse. So unless you only ever want to drink Pinot, you are not going to go with Burgundy

The poll should have France as a single choice, but then it would be almost sure to win, and I don’t think that is the purpose of the poll. [wink.gif]

[cheers.gif] Exactly

I’d say France in a heartbeat (though Jon and I are well biased). Italy would be a close second choice though.

I chose California, but would miss Italian wine terribly.

Burgundy.

Though it’s a very tough call, the way the options are presented. California’s fantastic variety of red wines (and amazing underpriced older wines) would probably make it the sensible answer. Italy may have greater variety, but I’ve had better luck (at least in terms of pricing) with great older wines from CA. [cheers.gif]

Cheers!

I love Burgundy. It’s most of my cellar. But I love Piedmontese wines almost as much and there’s no way I’d confine myself to ONLY Burgundy forever if I could have Barolo, Barbaresco, Valpollicella, Amarone, Vino Nobile, Brunello, Aglianico’s of various stripes, etc.

IF the poll wasn’t mixing tiny regions and entire countries, it would make sense. As it is, it does, so it doesn’t.

Exactly - France would not have worked - the idea was to see how many people love Burgs/Bords and to a lesser likelihood Rhone wines that they would rather have one of these fairly specific wines (although I would argue that within these regions there really is more than one type of wine made - right bank/left bank, Northern Rhone/CDP, CDN/CDB) than a whole country from which to choose. This board really is very Burgophilic which I might expect - I have to think a lot of the Bordophiles have stayed with RP where he does rule - in Burgundy I have learned Parker has no influence.

I tend to agree but even there you get some particular opinions which region is the best - see Ken’s poll…

I did think this same sentiment (echoed re. Italy), but it always seems with these polls that the spirit of the answer lies more in what region do I reach for most, and that is Burgundy, more than all of CA combined. Still, were I truly limited to just pinot and gamay I might, sometimes, occasionally, wish that I had chosen more for variety. Then I would have to wonder if it was Italy or CA that was better. So for pure preference I say Burg, for variety both CA and Italy would be wonderful choices.

Flawed poll AWWWK Flawed poll.

It’s been a long time since I did that.

I voted California for reasons mentioned. I love Burgundy, but dmned if I want to drink no red but Pinot (Gamay? [smileyvault-ban.gif]). Ditto Bordeaux, but dmned if I want to drink no red but Cab (Merlot? [smileyvault-ban.gif])
