I had thought the ‘06 Taittinger Comtes was an anomaly, a great wine (to my tastes) in a middling vintage. However, I’ve had some beautiful 2006’s from multiple houses and growers that have changed my mind. A 2006 Dom Perignon last night was stunning, despite showing poorly in its youth. A recent VC Grande Dame made me rethink my assessment of that wine and the vintage; it’s a beauty. Billecart-Salmon’s Cuvèe Nicolas François Billecart, while not reaching the heights of the magical ‘02, is a great wine that will continue to improve. Philipponnat’s 1522 Rosè and white are delicious. Cuvèe William Deutz as well (also a winery that doesn’t generate the praises it deserves). Vilmart too, although they seem to deliver in any vintage. Jose Michel, Gimmonet, and others have all shown well.

I opened a magnum last night with dinner. My friend, who’s not a big champagne drinker, turned to her husband and said “you need to buy some of this to open on my birthday”. It was an order, not a request.
While some have described bottle variation (I’ve seen some but very little), and others don’t like it (I suspect they find it so rich it seems garish), as Michael said, it has more glowing TN’s here than any other champagne.
