Opened a 2007 Copain Eagle Point Syrah on Friday night…
I love it…
Classic dark fruit, a little peppery but what is that lingering taste? almost oily but not, is it bacon, beef fat, im not really sure but its good. I think that this will get substantially better with some age as it was more balanced the next day.
I am glad I took my entire Copain allocation this year, as the 07 pinot is going to rock as well (no formal notes I was too “enhanced” at the time of drinking)
Stop it! Lie if you have to and talk about the impenetrable wall of tannin, unforgiving nose and disjointedness that can only be resolved with years of cellar time. I was already having a hard enough time laying off my 2007 Copain, and now this.
Seriously, glad you enjoyed it. I’m going to try hard not to repeat the experiment for a few years.
I havent had a Copain Eagle Point since the 2005 vintage (showed great last January); just too many dang syrahs that Wells offers every year, I counted 16 or so that are in CT. That being said, this looks like one I should have ponyied up for, and yes the price is very reasoanble.
Well, I broke down and popped one of these yesterday, and I’m finishing the other half today. Even on day 2, this wine is tight. In spite of the wealth of blue-black fruit, spice and bacon-like flavors, it is apparent that there is considerably more lurking underneath, to be revealed only with a few more years of cellar time. What Drew said is true: This is a great vintage for Copain, and I am excited to see what these wines will show in a few more years.
As much as I like this Eaglepoint, I am even more impressed with the 2007 Baker Ranch – at least today, as it is more approachable. I think it is a steal for the $35 release price. Great cool-climate Syrah, with more mineral, white pepper and grilled meat/bacon fat character. I ordered another sixer of that from the winery last week. Just wonderful stuff to my palate.
We drank a mag of Casey’s 1999 Eaglepoint Ranch Syrah tonight. As nice as it was
I hate the fake corks… they scare me and I’m not going to hold these wines any longer…
