I Don't Like Cricket

……I love it !

A little pre-Adelaide test warm up with some good mates, one of whom is a renowned cricket commentator. The first day’s play was an engaging contest. Test cricket at its best!

2020 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes : Some smoky mineral reduction. Loaded with sappy orchard fruits. Good depth and a hint of lime brulee. The finish is chalky and long and leaves a spicy calling card.

2017 Jobard-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Charmes: The nose has some struck match reduction and toast, along with pure white peach. The palate is intense and possesses quite fine detail. It has a heart of sweet orchard fruit and is lightly spiced. The finish has citrus and mineral cut and persistence is excellent.

2003 Grosset Riesling Polish Hill Clare Valley: Under screwcap, this is perfectly mature. Has some honeysuckle, candied lime, toast and a touch of pterol sneaking in to the aroma profile. The palate is juicy and full. Acidity is totally resolved and the wine is silky against the gums. Citrus notes repeat on the long finish.

2010 Domaine G. Roumier Bonnes Mares, Grand Cru : An evocative nose of blue fruits, purple flowers, earth and stones. It is so crisp and detailed, deep and wide. Great presence in the mouth, builds through the palate and so expansive. Plenty of chew to the incredibly long finish and an underlying cool stoniness. Brilliant!

2014 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Clos Vougeot, Grand Cru : Wide open for business. A nose of Asian spice, black cherry and pomegranate. The palate is rich and full, with s strand of licorice weaving through the flavour profile. It is velvety and expansive and still possesses ample chew to the finish.

2001 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino : Gave this plenty pf air and it was singing when we got to it. A deep, savoury nose of iron fillings, dark earth, leather and meat. The palate is quite silky and voluminous. It has so much earthy nuance and some plant matter. There’s ample grip from structural elements and it is persistent.

1995 Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico Riserva: In a magical place. Has the most intense core of black cherry fruit. So much eathy complexity here and a touch of leathery development. Luscious through the mid and good mineral tension on the tail. Harmonious and engaging and so long.

2003 Wendouree Shiraz: Dark, penetrating and sooty. Perfectly ripe blueberry and blood plum fruits. Some eucalypt and menthol. Waves of flavour roll in and the wine is luscious and creamy, with substantial tannins still buried under the flesh. Awesome power but not heavy in the slightest. The finish drives on and on. Still a pup.

Did Aussie wine critic Jeremy Oliver ever get to talk on test match special? I recall it was his great aspiration.

A better start in this one for the Aussies. Will they level the series? India obviously don’t agree with the old adage of not changing a winning side. Not sure that many changes was a wise move.

Thx for the notes on the 10 roumier bm; may have to take a crack at one sometime soon.

I’m not sure he ever did, Ian.

They had to play Rohit and Gill and Ashwin has been very good in Adelaide before. I reckon this one is delicately poised. The Aussies need to get out there today and make the most of what should be good batting conditions.

Drinking beautifully, Michael.

visited there last year while in Tuscany after having an also near magical bottle in a restaurant. In addition to current releases, they have a huge library of well priced older vintages going back a couple decades. Great visit also.

Damn, Jeremy! Today, I am drinking substantially less well, and my team played substantially less well! There’s always tomorrow

Looks as if they took your advice! Well, Head anyway!

NZ are in transition with the bowling attack. There will be series like that in India, and series like this one so far. I think they’ll come through fine.

I have not the slightest idea of cricket - am I out now?

If you’re not out, you stay out, but if you are out, then you’ll have to come back in.

And I will be drinking after England finally showing signs of life. Love the fact that they keep promoting players with talent and no experience like Smith and Bethel, and watched them grow into their roles.

Tonight it will be Cassoulet for a crowd plus some really interesting wines.

Where did you find the Wendoree Shiraz ?

Love watching Head bat., puts pressure on the bowlers from the first ball.

Hi Andy, one of my mates purchased it on release.

If Australia gets over the line today they can thank Head. A brilliant innings. He is a joy to watch when in full flight.

I watch Australia Test Cricket Highlights for a variety of reasons. But honestly, chief among them is so that when I finally overlap with Jeremy in France, or he comes to the East Coast, I can impress him by recalling sledging incidents

Beer Snake

When you get to Adelaide Nick, I’ll take you to the cricket and we’ll build a beer snake.

My son is just turning 3. So I think I’m about 4-5 years away, Jeremy. My eyes see that far, though
