Huh? What are these Turkish wines?

OKUZGOZU – BOGAZKERE
Kavaklidere, Yakut, Aegean, Turkey

NARINCE
Emir Sultana, Kavaklidere, Cankaya, Turkey

Looks like I’m going to a Turkish restaurant and these are on the glass list. I want to try everything, but it would be nice to know a little something. From the list, I am able to say that the first one is red, the second white. After that?..

Öküzgözü is probably the most cultivated Turkish variety, but rarely made into anything of real interest. Sort of Turkish Merlot or Tempranillo, if you will.

Boğazkere tends to make more interesting wines, but too often the wines are made in a style too sweetly-fruited for my preference.

Narince, on the other hand, tends to make quite nice and characterful whites. Often they could use a bit more acidity, but that’s about it.

Sultana = Thompson.

That’s what I thought.
That’s what I was afraid of.
